Honestly? I'm on the fence. On one hand I consider them harmless children's books. I have never read them myself because I really don't care for JK Rowling.

You are right that for many people that is their 'introduction' to the Craft and personally I wish it was not.

I hate the fact that people take books like HP and make it into something it is not. I also hate the fact that people look at something like HP and goofy halloween costumes and stupid movies and think, this is what all those witches are about.

99% of what you see, read and hear in movies, books, in media coming from Hollywood and television is absolute garbage. But people see it and believe everything they hear and see. Especially if it fits into their preconcieved narrative.

How would you feel if every halloween, there were Jesus constumes and masks and little Jesus candy bars that people handed out?

Has Rowling done harm? No greater harm in terms of content than any other fantasy author, in terms of scale? Perhaps.

However I also think that there has been a great increase in people seeking truth of magick since being exposed to Harry Potter. The problem then lies with the snake oil salesmen who just spin shit or repeat old stuff in new ways (often distorting the truth of the original (hehe Bible anyone?))

All that said - there ARE very knowledgeable people who take the time to research, explain and don't succumb to the bullshit.
Unfortunately, as always, it is an uphill battle. Truth doesn't sell and everyone wants a buck. Then of course there's the giants (that are being slain ;)) that have the money and the pull to seed, push, grow and flood the global space in order to affect it how they like.

Edit: I guess the question I didn't ask is: Has more harm been done than good in a 'corruption of versus introduction to' sense?

Part of the problem is that there is a necessity for secrecy on the part of the worker of the Craft. As pagans, heathens and witches we still have to live under the radar so to speak. We simply can't be out there like other religions can.

It's gotten better over the years but still that means there are few us in the open enough to actually teach this stuff to a larger part of the people. That opens the door to the con men, charlatans and snake oil salesmen to get out there and make quick cash off of people looking for answers.

Then you have the media and authors who unintentionally and sometimes intentionally push garbage because that is the perception that people buy.

A book about an actual witch picking herbs in the forest is boring. People want the book about the Demoness with the warty green skin battling Jesus on the fields of Armageddon. That makes the cash lol

Has more harm been done? I'd say yes.

The secrecy thing. Yeah... unfortunately there are still literal witch hunts. Perhaps more accurately is 'not in our box hunt' :P

It does open the door to the con-men etc.

Y'know, I see all these people with the Deathly Hallows tattoo which is clearly a variation of the philosophers stone symbol; it irks me. It seems essentially like a splitting, or division of what should be whole. Perhaps a different topic, but there it is :P
