Step 1, take the water to your local pool place to be tested, just put a few ounces in a clean bottle

Step 2, they are going to tell you to get the alkalinity set before adjusting anything else. This is very true, get alkalinity (different than ph) right before anything else

Step 3, once alkalinity is set, adjust your PH and chlorine levels. Add chlorine at sun down, when adding stabilizer don't backwash for 48 hours
 Quoting: OU8122

How often does one backwash?
 Quoting: Fortunabeargirl

Depends on how often you need to filter your water. If you keep it clean by vacuuming and it never turns green, maybe once every couple weeks. If you're battling green water (which you'll probably spend a LOT of time doing), it could be every other day.

Not yet, but God preserve me bc THIS is my worst nightmare. scared
 Quoting: Fortunabeargirl

The first time that happened to us it was so scary but no biggie really. Once you get the levels right it will go back to normal in one day.

...

that's pretty much the secret.
Stabilizer fixes the chlorine.
If there's no stabilizer, the chlorine evaporates out.
Proper PH is required.
Algeacide kills the algae.
 Quoting: diverdan01

Great! Bc that's what I gleaned from it. Up until I can check out the BBB method anyway, but the algae issue I haven't even begun to consider.

I have Clorox Pool Algaecide and Clarifier, but have been so confused up until now that I haven't even looked at it or read the instructions.

I feel MUCH more confident going fwd, thanks to you fine people.

I should have just come here to begin with!
 Quoting: Fortunabeargirl

clarifier simply glues smaller particles into bigger ones that can by trapped by the filter.
 Quoting: diverdan01

That's good to know!
 Quoting: Fortunabeargirl

yeah its some kind of polymer that basically makes small particles clump together so that they are big enough to get filtered out..hence clearer water. Not sure how long you should stay out of the water once putting that in. I wouldn't use it unless your water is very cloudy. OR..just pay a pool service like we do...maybe 50 bucks a month more than DIY and we don't have to worry about it. They vaccuum..brush..add chemicals ..backflush..etc..twice a year they break down the filter..clean it and reline with DE. Not a huge fan of the cartridge filters..they are ok but I prefer the older DE technology

Re: Anyone here ever have an above ground pool? Chemical confusion!
We got an above ground pool.

It's up and running, but I am lost trying to figure out the chemicals. I've read and watched videos, but I can't make heads or tails of it.

I went to the pool supply store and had my water tested.

They gave me a list of a few hundred dollars worth of things that I "need."

What do I REALLY need? Bare minimum.

What supplies are in your pool chemistry cabinet?

What is your routine? Hints and hacks welcome!

Thanks in advance!

That you'd ask a board full of retarded trash for advice, or that having an above ground pool fits very well with retard trash.

You have a pool but cant afford chemicals, Id recommend just taking it down then.

Re: Anyone here ever have an above ground pool? Chemical confusion!
Thank you for the replies!

I adjusted for alkalinity first by using baking soda. Now it's too high I guess.

Will soda ash bring it down?

But what really confused me, is that I shocked the pool at night and when I checked the chlorine levels the next morning, there was NO chlorine in the pool. Wth?

Guy at the pool supply store said that I needed Cyanauric something (conditioner) bc the sunlight ate up all the chlorine. But I added the chlorine at night after dark, and checked early morning. So, how can it be that?

Do I need to worry about Calcium hardness?

I thought that the alkalinity affected the PH, and I am really confused how to keep both in line when one affects the other.

Which adjustment should I worry about first?
 Quoting: Fortunabeargirl

I would not worry about Calcium harndess in an above ground. Calcium levels can screw up tile grout in inground pools because the water will leach calcium out of the grout.

You need to focus on 2 things.
You should get the HTH 6-1 strips. They are pretty much listed in order of importance.

cyanauric acid is last...my understand is the level of that impacts your levels of PH.

PH is the key if you have chlorine problems.

Dip the HTH stick in the water for 10 seconds. give it 10 seconds or so and read it.

Your PH needs to be in the middle range.

If PH is off, then sunlight will eat chlorine. But if your test strip shows you are in the middle range, then just shock your pool and get your chlorine levels up.

Use the strips and focus on getting Chlorine and PH in the middle range. Unless any of the other measures are extremely off from the correct color, I would not worry about them.

I grew up with above ground pools at my Dad's and have had an inground for 20 years.

Look into the BBB method. Bleach, baking soda, and borax. It works and it's the cheapest way to do it, but it's a neverending hassle. Lowest possible maintenance requires saltwater or mineral system. Pricey, but you'll spend that (plus countless headaches) on chemicals anyway.

just keep adding new water,
use excess to water yard plants,
no poison needed.

I have well water, but my pool is deep. Something to think about for sure.
 Quoting: Fortunabeargirl

Don't fill your pool with well water... too many metals and your water will turn green. Might also burn up your well pump.

We get our pool water trucked in every year, costs us about $200 but it's worth it. Topping off with well water is ok but do not use it to fill your pool!

Happy swimming! Our pool has been open month but it's been so cool here, we've only had one good pool day so far. And I fought like hell to find chlorine... oh the irony

Its simple. One gallon of chlorine and 2-3 oz of acid. Both at any place they sell pool supplies. The chlorine kills the algae etc, the acid acts like sunscreen for the chlorine. Chlorine is impossible to find but they selling a "shock" liquid. Get it and use the same mixture. Don't swim for a HR or so and run your pump often. Also, brushing the sides helps but be careful you don't tear! I have...&$#$%-'

Re: Anyone here ever have an above ground pool? Chemical confusion!
I've had pools my whole life. With very special exceptions, all I've ever needed was liquid chlorine (shock) and muratic acid. I usually have a floater with a few chlorine tabs in it also. Once a week with the shock. Check ph for acid once a week also. I would usually just walk the perimeter of the pool with the shock and let it slowly pour out all the way around. Leave the pump off for an hour when doing this. Brush the pool and turn pump back on. Easy peasy
 Quoting: overwatch

Thanks for the specifics. I was wondering if I should have the pump off or on. The only Shock I've seen around here are the packets of granules. Should I still do it the way you described?

I'm guessing the muriatic acid is to lower alkalinity and therefore the PH.
 Quoting: Fortunabeargirl

Yep same way
