GLP I am totally freaked out hearing the news about the Miami condo collapsing this morning. Just this past Monday, in mid afternoon, my 34-year-old son stood in the center of his living room in his condo while his seven-year-old daughter sat on the sofa on her tablet, his entire living room ceiling cracked, and completely crashed to the floor around them. No warning, no nothing!

They are still waiting for an inspector to show up. His condominium complex, which is the Villas of Countryside in Clearwater Florida are not communicating with my son at all because he rents. They will communicate with his landlord but not with him. His landlord told him that it will be about a month before insurance can get cleaned up and repaired. In the meantime he has been completely displaced.

His seven-year-old daughter was saved from being crushed because she was sitting in the corner of the sofa and when the drywall collapsed it created a sort of triangle around her and completely protected her. It's crazy as hell. I have pictures but I haven't posted them anywhere yet. I need to do that. I also have a video that he took right after explaining everything that happened.


I just wanted to let you know that after what happened Monday, and then after hearing what happened this morning in Miami, my head is exploding! This is too crazy....

No, there was no water leak whatsoever. Several people in my son's sphere came to look at it. Some of them were in the construction industry. There is no sign whatsoever of water damage. No condensation, nothing. A brand-new roof had been put on the building about nine months ago.

My son is a realtor, and he has a keen eye for things like that when selling or buying homes. There had been no prior signs. If there had been any kind of water damage we would have found it. Believe me they looked.

I just uploaded the video he made to YouTube. That wway you all can see his story. Maybe it was crappy construction, I don't know, whatever the case he has been living there 10 years. There have been no other instances of this to our knowledge, but of course condominium ASSociation folks aren't going to say anything about it are they?

There is no glue on the back of that drywall. A glue and screw is common on ceilings. There is none. Faulty installation.

There is no glue on the back of that drywall. A glue and screw is common on ceilings. There is none. Faulty installation.

He's been a condo since 2013 and it's just now collapsing? And then another building in Miami collapses? I don't know maybe I've been on GLP too long. I think my head is fried.

There is no glue on the back of that drywall. A glue and screw is common on ceilings. There is none. Faulty installation.

I can tell you why that happened. The ceiling is always expanding and contracting because of the sun exposure on the roof. The only thing holing that drywall up was the screws and they worked themselves through the drywall portion of the drywall. There is a paper face that the screws support the drywall with, Typically the glue and screw method would have prevented that condition. When you spray the popcorn ceiling over the drywall it weakens the paper face on the drywall. The paper face was the only thing holding that drywall up, it was a botched job 100% don't let anyone tell you different.(The insurance company will try and poo poo because then they won't have a payout). If you can find the original builder he is negligent and should pay. There is no statute of limitations on negligence.
