If the most important rule of the Bible was only followed by one person in the whole kingdom, why be a sucker to get the approval of yet another? The Good Samaritan doesn't make the other Samaritans good--and those are his neighbors. He is just a useful Samaritan.
Quoting: IfYouInsist He was good to someone that culturally was not his associate. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64698495 It wasn't paid forward, so next. Quoting: IfYouInsist Who cares if it was paid forward? The type of self development we want has no interest in repayment in any form. Love is just freely given without any strings attached. . Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64698495 To *neighbors* Samaritans and Israelites aren't neighbors. If someone drops their wallet in front of me, I am obligated *not* to give it back if they aren't my neighbor. Because that would constitute giving them a 'gift.' If we are going to play around with what 'neighbor' and 'stranger' and 'sojourner' mean in context, then you are already dealing with me in a non-loving manner, wouldn't you say? As for 'freely-given,' I'm only pure enough racially for 'tough love,' and without any of the other kinds, that's functionally indistinguishable from *hate* Nice try, though. Also, I didn't say 'paid back,' I said 'paid forward.' Meaning being kind to a cruel people equals being cruel to a kinder people than they are. The guy who fell down didn't help any strangers up himself after the fact, or Jesus would have mentioned it. Like I said, a sucker's game.
