The other night, I thought I heard an explosion in the distance. This has happened here a bunch of times in the last.... 6 months. Nothing in the news. No follow up. Other neighbors hear it and feel it. So about 15 min ago.. 11:45 pm A huge truck, that makes a loud grinding hum as it drives. It just drove down my street. Its 11:45 pm here.... They had a loud speaker going.Red flashing lights. Never in my whole life has this occurred here, with a moud speaker.... Never, and it was saying : STAY IN YOUR HOMES, then something about an explosion. Needless to say, I heard no explosion.... Not tonight. Then I heard it going up and down all the streets over here. The grinding noise it makes can be heard over the loud speaker. So I called my friend about half mile away. Nothing by him. I'm wondering if this was a dry run. I don't know anybody who uses the term "outer Boro." I've never heard that term. Instead, people would say, if trying to hide where they live, "one of the boroughs." Or why not say which borough. I don't know, seems odd to me. Do you live in nyc? Anything not Manhattan is an outer Boro. That term is old as the hills. Anything not in the City is Booklyn, Bronx, Queens, S.I. Seriously, I was born in Brooklyn, lived there most of my life, worked in the City, also lived in Queens and I've never heard that term. If you just meet somebody and you say where do you live, they absolutely never respond by saying in an outer borough. That phrase actually makes me laugh. So getting back to your post, have you spoken to any of your neighbors about this, have you asked them whether they've heard anything like that in the middle of the night? ______________ As long as I am an American citizen and American blood runs in these veins I shall hold myself at liberty to speak, to write, and to publish whatever I please on any subject.” - Elijah Parish Lovejoy(1802-1837) All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent...Thomas Jefferson The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government...Thomas Jefferson When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty...Thomas Jefferson Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light...George Washington |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80039300 I live in Queens, and I know that sometimes in the summer they drive by in a truck with a loudspeaker and flashing lights telling people to stay inside --spraying for Mosquitoes. Maybe that was it? It was EXPLOSION....and they've never sprayed here fur that... And why do that at almost midnight. No one is awake or outside. And if they're spraying for West Nile, better stay in. That crap they spray for it is toxic. No bromo dude... |

Having been raised in NYC and lived there most of my life (until now), there's nothing weird in what you describe. There are always crazy sounds and explosions going off at odd hours. Sometimes megaphones with crazy messages are blasting down the street at 3 am or loud music from a car screeching past your building. Police sirens are no big deal either. That's part of NYC life. |

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — In a second attempt to combat mosquitos and West Nile virus, New York City is dousing northeastern Queens in mosquito repellent this July. The health department will send low-flying helicopters over Alley Pond Park, Kissena Park and the abandoned Flushing airport between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday July 1, Friday July 2, and Tuesday July 6. This is the second time this year that the health department has doused the city in mosquito repellent, and the second spray is supposed to further inhibit the spread of the West Nile virus. Only nonresidential areas, such as marshes and wetlands, will get sprayed with the larvicide, according to the health department. The chemical, VectoMax® GS, is environmentally friendly and has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, according to the health department. And, according to the city's Health Commissioner, Dr. Dave A. Chokshi, not only is the "aerial larviciding" safe, but it also helps ensure that people stay better protected from mosquito-borne diseases, specifically including West Nile Virus. |
