No really. It's like being crowned the world's fastest guitar picker. Who cares?

Well, other guitar players for starters...

Kinda like being the fastest runner in the Olympics

It may seem like an alien concept to you, but being the best at something is a worthy calling

Like graduating at the top of your class

But yeah, if you are a low talent shmoo it might be a trigger event

Okay they are the best. No one still cares I promise you. No one is like "Man, Stefan Khacheturian can play the shit out of a drum roll on those practice pads!" There are no guitarists or anyone who can name the World's Fastest Picker off the top of their head.
 Quoting: Revolution of Consciousness

Ok, seriously. If you are, in fact, recognized as the fastest picker (Roy fuckin Clark) or you win a legit drum contest (Jo Jo Mayer) you can score major endorsements. If you are already a working talent, it brings fame and renown to your already considerable swag. More than one drummer has cut to the front of the line in this way. The era of social media makes it possible to directly monetize this accomplishment, and leverage it into a steady stream of self produced content that can be lucrative to the extreme.

The interwebs has changed the meaning and method of what it is to be a professional musician.

If you think this is trivial stuff, you are missing the big picture

Yes, actually. Just as in every other human pursuit. It is the only road to Carnegie Hall. Doctors practice, lawyers practice- hell, even a dog gets praise for performing a successful trick after much practice.

Why you throw so much shade on the pursuit of excellence through personal discipline?

If you don’t like good musicians, why are you on this thread?

Gish was arguably his best album

Then the heroin got him

Truly, the first record changed rock drumming for the next generation of drummers.

And introduced so many rock drummers to their left foot

But then, heroin

Hell of a drug

7. Jazz drummers.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78704550

LOL This!! Jazz is the hardest style of music I swear to god it is! In order to be good at jazz you have to almost immerse yourself in it and honestly who the fuck has time for that?! LOL
 Quoting: ConcernedHuman

Depends on where you start

If all you practice from day one is jazz-style drumming, it’s actually very logical, and it doesn’t take long to play pretty “complex” stuff. Jazz drumming emphasizes 4 way independence, and from that things get a little cray

Rock drumming is super linear, and does not emphasize 4 way independence. Rock drummers coming to jazz must unlearn some habits, which is difficult

Not surprisingly, drummers are really good at mathematical logic, and are super sensitive to ratio based environments

When you combine the two, you get a whole new vocabulary as a drummer

The Mushugga drummer is an excellent example
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80615360

All those metal dudes are nuts. Matt Halpern, Matt Garstka, Matt Reiner...lol why are they all named Matt!?!?!

I've been playing for 20 years. I'm a very linear rock drummer. I can't play jazz. I can barely shuffle LOLOL

One of the most versatile drummers ever. Omar Hakim has recorded and toured with some heavyweights in every genre over the past 45 years.

So many incredible drummers out there, all genres.

One of my favorites: Joe Morello

Check out "Take Five", of course! Dave Brubeck Quartet

"Take Five" is a jazz standard composed by saxophonist Paul Desmond and originally recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet for their album Time Out at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studios in New York City on July 1, 1959. Two years later it became a surprise hit and the biggest-selling jazz single ever. - Wikipedia

I once had a VHS with one of the best live takes of "Take Five" with an extended drum solo I've ever seen. Can't seem to locate it on youtube or anywhere unfortunately.
