User ID: 77082640 United States 07/17/2021 06:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My sage advice to anyone who asks about moving to Fla is If it the South East Coast ...don't go below Lake Okeechobee. and stay far far away from Lake Worth. Dade and Broward County have the highest insurance rates. And cost of living is high too. And taxes. But don't junk up Middle and Northern Florida with Yankees, that's the last refuge for the old Floridians and manatee. Lake Okeechobee is like a meteor crater or sink hole or something. I don't even think there are any fish in there. heh. They just use the water to make more concrete blocks. |

Could be... But there are just as many no's, and over 80 blank views. Florida is a red state. I know GLP doesn't advertise as a right wing site but seems to attract them. Maybe it's just most of the intelligent people on the internet are on GLP and are from Florida? Seriously though, the results have surprised me. It will be interesting to see after the night crew. |

That's a whole other thread. Horse Racing went downhill there too. We owned a few active racers, they were treated poorly so I hear you. Not so much in Florida but in places like Charleston West Virginia and other obscure tracks. Jai Lai was fun, but sooo rigged. I liked to go down to the beach and watch the Cuban men play dominos at the picnic tables. Not sure it was a gambling game, it was just cool. In college I minored in Gulf stream and Hialeah. Saturday night poker with the U of M football team. They had unlimited "laundry money". Then at sunrise we had breakfast at Wolfie's. Good times "Aside from the small band of Forteans scattered around the world, nobody seems to notice all aspects of this phantasmagoria." John Keel |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80586085 United States 07/17/2021 07:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ... Quoting: Agent 99 Yes. But it's hot and crowded. And the environment is being torn up. The Everglades were a natural cooling/filtering system and that was ruined. Key Largo reefs have been destroyed by sewage spills from all the building there. I remember when there were horse fields in Monroe Key and no land locked tarpon. Yeah I'm familiar with how great Florida used to be in the old days, it's a shame that South Florida became a mishmash of condos and bridges, then the Everglades got ruined. I wish I was alive during the days before they tore Florida up. Sounds like the both of you just lived in the wrong area, just as it is with every state or city. My area is great. SWFL is growing rapidly and looking for great residents, so please stay where you are... Just kidding, we need people to fill jails and pick up litter and stuff. Please come back. Naples beach had millions of seashells, and NO people. Sanibel did too for awhile. Now there are kayaks and bullshit in the Thousand Islands killing the mangroves and leaving trash everywhere, shame. Gulf Coast was never desirable, because of mercury levels. Not enough circulation. Nah, I'll remember the days of Flipper and bottle collecting in the Keys. And Crandon Park and riding our bikes to Matheson Hammock. Sanibal was once a hidden gem. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 78689367 United States 07/17/2021 07:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Serious 'stuff' happening in central west and south coast of Florida right now. May last a while too. Red-tide Timeline Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78689367 Historical timeline to 2006. A few highlights... 1878 - Florida's first protracted period of red-tide episodes begins and continues for 10 years. 2005 -- Mote Marine concludes a five-year study of red tide by acknowledging that there may have been an increase in frequency and severity of algae blooms in the Gulf. Mote restates its emphasis on monitoring outbreaks, estimating that an adequate system could cost $50 million to build and $8 million a year to operate. The Florida Legislature passes a $5 million research package, which the governor approves. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences concludes a five-year study with a warning that the human consequences of red-tide exposure are likely greater than previously reported, both in terms of mortality from consuming contaminated shellfish and in respiratory damage from repeated long-term exposure to even low levels of airborne toxins. 2005 -- Two Florida scientists, Larry Brand of the University of Miami and Brian Lapointe of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, report that their seven-month research project shows strong evidence of a direct correlation between "nutrient" runoff and increased red-tide blooms. The study is financed principally by Lee County after the chairman of the local Chamber of Commerce said the algae were becoming an economic concern for their impact on fishing and tourism. While underscoring that research remains inconclusive, Mote Marine acknowledges that "human-derived pollutants may be intensifying and prolonging red tides along the coast." Mote urges cooperative action to reduce runoff. One of five states represented at a conference on the state of the Gulf's health, Mississippi urges further study of nutrient runoff as a culprit in red tide. 2006 -- The Sarasota County Commission considers a proposal to restrict the use of some fertilizers as a means of limiting runoff linked by many to red tide. The commission plans a series of public meetings to discuss the matter. After working Irma I knew I'd eventually leave. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80493484 I'll probably retire there, most likely somewhere in Nature Coast (Weeki Wachee, Crystal River, Cedar Key, etc.). I will definitely want 5 acres or so. I live in South Florida...went up to Orlando not long ago... They got a place on 192 called Machine Gun America where you can fire a real live machine gun. Within a mile there's a "Museum of Military History" that got featured on the Travel Channel... Old Town and the Fun Spot still there--Fun Spot's been remodeled with new rides, it looks like... ..drove around--er, crawled around (so much traffic) International Drive...saw the Titanic Museum is still there also... Hardly a mask in sight in Orlando--where I live there's alot more masks being used... One of my favorite FL memories is the smell of orange blossoms in the spring--back in the '80s before the freezes--driving on the Turnpike you could smell them for miles...We used to go to the Seaquarium too... If I could I'd have orange trees--I have a gardenia near my front door--I love it; used to have a night blooming jasmine that would bloom in tune with the summer and winter solistices--Idk why or how, I just remember it being Christmas and that jasmine filled the air--loved it... Thanks for thread, OP--like reading about the FL I used to know... Life finds a way. |
