That sort of thing wouldn't happen so much without their gatekeepers, or "trusted interlocutors" out their muddying and disrupting the marketplace of ideas. They have themselves to blame, as well as their draconian attempts to limit information. Given these people's track record, it's easy to take them at their word with just a sound byte, as it gets harder and harder to find full context in a world of increased amounts of censorship by "trusted interlocutors."
