Although there are some therapies that have been shown to decrease the amount of FeLV in the bloodstream of affected cats, these therapies may have significant side effects and may not be effective in all cases. Unfortunately, there is currently no definitive cure for FeLV.

Says there is no cure. Put him down buddy to make him suffer. You're already helping him .

Re: Need help with a dying cat
just provide a comfortable place for the cat to sleep, indoors if your comfortable, and everything that he needs and just let him die at his own time, there's no need to take him to a vet and have him put down. Let the cat die like cats have died for millions of years, on their own time.

In the cold months, a heating pad for the cat to lay on would really help the cat.

Give him a few pinches of catnip everyday

Give him a teaspoon of virgin, unrefined coconut oil. It liquefies at about 72-75 degrees so be sure it's stored a little below this temp..enough for it to be solid but soft. The cat will lick it up and lick it (especially when hungry). It is great for furball treatment as well.

This. You can also give him some canned coconut milk to put some weight on.

I found this:

Sick cats need the best quality of food available because of their catabolic state. Their requirements for protein, fat and energy exceed those of healthy cats, so high-quality nutrition is of the utmost importance. Cats that don't get enough high-quality protein will start to metabolize their own tissues to compensate, leading to wasting and a reduced ability to fight off disease. Balanced raw cat food diets are ideal for superior nutrition. Cats with regressive infection can be fed the usual raw food as their immune systems are not compromised. More care should be taken in cats that have persistent infection with the virus, as the immune system may not be able to handle even normal amounts of pathogens. With these cats, dry food especially should be avoided. Besides the inferior quality of nutrition from kibble-type foods, they are more likely to harbor molds and bacteria than other foods.

You should work with your veterinarian if you are feeding a persistently infected cat a raw meat diet. A few extra steps should be added when making the food. This method can also be used for any cat that may have a compromised immune system, such as a cat that is on steroids. When making the ground raw cat diet, the meat can be baked briefly before grinding to kill surface bacteria. In whole raw meats, pathogens that may have been introduced onto the meat are on the outside only. With "Feline Nutrition's Easy Homemade Cat Food Recipe," place the chicken in a baking dish and bake for about 10 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then remove the meat from the pan and immediately immerse it in cold water for a minute or two to stop the cooking process. This method will drastically reduce or eliminate any bacteria present. It will cook just the outside of the meat, but that's okay. Do not discard any liquid in the cooking pan; add it into the ground mix. Follow the rest of the recipe as you normally would.

Take him to a cat only vet.
The last vet I had, mis-diagnosed 2 of my cats and they died painful early deaths.
Now I go to a cat only vet and my cat is extremely healthy and is almost 18 years old.
Here is the place I go to. It's in San Francisco. Maybe you can get some advice by calling them.

Re: Need help with a dying cat
The FIV is actually not a big a deal as the feline leukemia.

The thing with the feline leukemia is the white blood cell count will eventually start dropping and it will become vunerable to any infections like others here were saying.

But, I have seen improvement in cats with feline leukemia using small amounts of collodial silver in their water.

Some cats can overcome it and live for years, but eventually, it usually is what gets them in the end.

whatever you decide, i know most cats tend to be dehydrated i guess.

i got mine a fountain, made a big difference, been drinking a lot more water. it's a nice ceramic one with a ball on top water flows over and is silent. seems to help stimulate thirst well.

good on you for helping the cat. i think cats are very interesting.

I had this grey & white cat show up at my door about a month ago. I feed him but he is skin and bones and not gaining weight. I got him some wet food and he really likes it, but still not gaining weight.

I think someone dumped him because he never leaves my porch and waits for me every morning in the windowsill.

Anyway, I took him to the vet a couple days ago to get blood work done and a Snap test and they said he had a very strong positive to Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and Feline Leukemia Virus. They said he is neutered and approximately 12 years old. They wanted to euthanize him but I said no and took him home.

Is there anything I can do to help him be comfortable and live longer? He doesn't seem to be in any pain but he is somewhat lethargic.

Hi OP,

Firstly, I would encourage you to take him inside, dignity and comfort. A cosy place to sleep and some human interaction of positive loving words.

www.earthclinic.com is a great place for Remedies, for humans and pets. Its a tad new agey lookig to a Christian, but it is probably the best health advice/natural remedies we ever found. Type in in the Search box the illness and all of the links with earth clinic at the end will provide you with a plethora of help from people who have treated their pets with remedies.

God bless

Re: Need help with a dying cat
So today I bought some organic virgin coconut oil to mix with his food. I read in several places on the Internet that is has saved some cats and they started gaining weight. It was 9 dollars for a small jar but I don't care about that. I tasted it and it's kind of like a coconut grease with very little flavor. I mixed a teaspoon full with his can of wet food and he just gulped it down.

It is very hard to give medication to cats so I am glad this went well. He's became a surrogate father to a feral kitten that showed up in one of my bushes and protects it. He is her whole world, she just gazes at him.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79142066

^ ^ ^ Bring him inside if you're able to. The FIV lowers his immunity to anything, this will give him a chance to heal.

'Mature' cat food is designed to be smellier, (to encourage them to eat), and has the taurine and such that they need.

Not gaining weight can be linked to having intestinal parasites - Deworming him may help.

[link to www.alleycat.org (secure)]

Flea bites are much more likely to get infected on sick cats - If you notice anything crawling on him, try a topical such as Revolution, which will last a month, and will help with both fleas and ear mites. Avoid the types of flea collars you'd buy at the grocery store - Cats are sensitive to insecticides, and from what I've read, (and what I put on my own), the prescription ones tend to be less dangerous. You should be able to call the vet you took him to and have them approve the prescription for buying this online.

That's what I would do. I can't remember off hand but there are things you can give him, vitamins that are good for cats. Also a little collodial silver in the water, a little cbd oil in the meat.

And potentially, dandelion leafs, ivermectin, cancer preventing.

L-lysine for pets really helps with their stomach issues.

[link to homescapepets.com (secure)]

So apparently dandelion root and leaves which you can get at the health food store, is not only good for humans but for cats.

Bake it into some homemade crunchies, just don't use corn flours because they're not good for cats. a little flour with ground meats, and a little vegetalbes, no onion or garlic, but there are recipes online, just put in the corn and instead maybe add a mixture of dandelion roots and leaves pounded up and some cat nip.

Tumeric is on the list.

So Tumeric, curcumin, dandelion root and leaf, with some cbd, would be anti cancer, anti inflammatory and anti pain.

I'm convinced he's having a good time. Maybe not the best time, but I wouldn't feel too noble about killing him for his own good.

Prognosis? Don't know, but I'm not optimistic. Nothing lives forever, and that includes him. You'll become more and more attached to him (and probably to the feral kitten, too, you cat magnet you). But that's how things work: nothing ventured, nothing gained, and yes, there will be pain.

"He is not well but some of us aren't either!" says a lot. No one sought out Dr. Kevorkian because they had psoriasis. Kitty seems to be enjoying his new friend. Carry on.
