I think they stayed put at the Elbe river as the Soviets took Berlin and planted the Soviet flag on the Reichstag. The Germans who fought in the west front considered themselves extremely fortunate compared to the ones who fought the Soviets in the east. I don't expect 99% of Americans to understand because this is unbreakable lifelong inferred understanding from American propaganda. Not an insignificant number of Americans to this day will also swear up and down that their distant uncle, Grandpa, or great grandpa liberated Nazi death camps as well. Go research the truth. |

Respectfully, we don't or can't know the truth regarding what is currently unfolding in our present day historic times of epic proportion. It really isn't realistic therefore, to know the "truth" as to what actually took place in previous historic eras. |
