First car I ever owned was a 1955 Chevy Bel Aire 2 door. Had the big bad ass 265 V8, biggest engine at that time. 2 speed slip and slide power glide trans. Damn I was hot shit cruising Whittier Blvd back in the day.
I still own it. It’s most definitely not stock anymore.

I cannot believe you still own it, wow.

I had a '77 Ford LTD II. Wasn't particularly fond of it, I really wanted something smaller but it was cheap and had a good ride to it. I drove that thing all over Mass and Vermont when I worked at C&S warehouse in the late 1980's.

Re: I had a 1977 Cutlass Supreme
It was around 1985 or so. I was young and wanted to see a bunch of cities to see if I had any great desire to move to one of them.

Avis had a deal that you could rent a car for a week for $170 with unlimited free mileage.

So I rented a 1985 or whatever year it was Cutless Supreme. They were getting smaller but still a really nice comfy car.

Well, I drove for 1 week solid, only stopping for food, gas, and the occasional motel room.

wasn't really a detailed tour, but I would come to a city, drive the loop around it, stop for lunch or whatever, Read a newspaper. Then on to the next city.

When I turned the rental car back in, they checked the mileage and they could not believe how many miles I had put on it. :)

Well ~ which city won the tour?

Trust me, you felt quite gutsy in the power of cars like that.

Dad had a 1985 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. Coupe, vinyl half roof, plush upgraded interior, 305 V8, 4bbl, overdrive.
Man oh man that car hauled ass, gobbled gas, and was literally like driving a sofa. When thos 4 barrels all kicked in it was niiiiccceee!

Unfortunately my little sister was given the car as I moved out out by then.

BTW amazing car, but we did call it the 'gutlass', it was a VERY sarcastic nickname.
lol

Oh man... I know the feeling.

My "First car" was a 1977 Ford Custom 500.... Not quite as cool as yours but, YES! I remember it well.

Kind of a mix between mint and lime green. Made a whirring noise as I drove it. (My friends called it "The Green Missile") LOL.

Had a shitty stereo it, I replaced it with one I bought at Grand Auto. (First stereo I ever installed) Circa 1983'sh.

Those DEFINITELY were the days.

Re: I had a 1977 Cutlass Supreme
The 74 Cutlass with the 455 Buick made one helluva dirt track car. Entering turn 3 I always had time to look back and see the rest of the field coming off turn 2.

77 Monte Carlo, another winner, lapped the field one night.

Still have an 85 Monte Carlo SS, black, T-tops, street only for this one.

One evening, out for pizza, my buddy's 77 Cutlass sat burning in my driveway, almost took my house with it, suspicious fire started for no apparent reason. We were surprised when we got back.

Don't forget the steering wheel. In those cars, they were hard, thin plastic. No bulky airbag. Plenty of finger grooves and your hand totally encapsulated the part you were grabbing. Your really felt the control you had over the car with gripping the wheel.

I had a '79 Cutlass Supreme, paid $800 for it in '92. Sadly, it died when I was in college and I couldn't afford to get it fixed. The city towed it.

Now, I stand to inherit '72 Cutlass 442.

It's the circle of life

That is an amazing car as well, a friend I knew had one.
Its the vehicle I had the pleasure/fear of traveling in at 120 mph through the Minnesota corn field country. No seat belts - I don't like that kind of thrill though I know some get a kick from it. It was late one summer night and all I could think is it only takes one stupid deer bolting out of those corn fields to end the fun for good.

I was more about the float along at manageable speeds, with some kind of music for mood.

Yeah for extra credit did you ever do it on a pair of those slip on candies high heels! LOL Me and my girlfriends, pushing when there was no hill, run and jump in! LOL

Edit to add, Gypsy - somehow an old Beetle Bug suits how I picture you perfectly. My mom had a secession of Beetle Bugs when I was growing up. I like the ones with the big chrome bumpers on them. I can still smell the interiors of these old cars when I close my eyes. What was that smell? Naugahyde? Bhahahah

Just getting around to being here this morning, and making replies. So fun to reminisce, travel in the mind, back to the days of the yellow sun, cars that actually made you feel something when you drove them, and the music coming from the 8-tracks . . .

I love the mid to late 70s boats... they are "gutless" like another person said because they got detuned and smogged, but you can easily change that. Hot Rod magazine built a Nascar style '75 Laguna a couple years ago that was PERFECT.

We used to have fun in my old beat ass trucks. I had a K5 I used to pack people in with two cases of beer and spend hours driving around logging roads. I sent my friend to pull someone out in it one time, I was too drunk... watched from the other side of the lake as his dumb ass hooked up to the kid's differential and pulled it clean off the truck, shackles and all lol.
