A big reason of why to downsize after becoming empty nesters so your little birdies don’t have space to move back in. My answer would be no. I rather gift them first month’s rent (aka a one time get out of jail card) elsewhere and they can clean up their own mess.

You tell them they can stay there as long as they do 2 things:
1) Pay you rent. It can be $200 a month, but something.
2) They pay back their landlord $x each month that they owe.

That’s how you continue to raise responsible adults. No free rides or you enable the behavior. Tell them if they fail to do either give them 30 days to find other housing.

Understand they put themselves in this situation, if you do not put hard rules around this they will continue to play on your sympathy that you don’t want them to be homeless. I guarantee that if you do have to kick them out they will find a way to survive, it won’t be comfortable (expensive hotel, friend’s couch) but they’ll learn their lesson. If you enable them if they break the rules, they’ll never learn their lesson and you will always be burdened with them.

F you. My parents were land lords growing up. When people didn't pay that effected my life style. I would have rainboots for shoes and had to drop out of my extra curricular activity. Not to mention we ate nothing but chicken every night and my dad yelled constantly about our electric bill. We lived practically in darkness no no heat except the fireplace. So FFFFF people like you! You are a scum bag that could care little about leaving others families out to dry, when they worked full times jobs and still had to upkeep their rentals on the week end. And, I have done my share of cleaning up and renovating after messy dirty tenant. I have never treated property I rented poorly nor did I ever leave behind a huge mess.

I can't tell you how much I hate people that use the system to skip rent. It is too long of a process to kick them out when they don't even try to pay rent either.

Actually it would cause a radical shift in society. Home prices are grossly overinflated thanks to mortgages, and renting is screwed because of property taxes and too much immigration.

It would cause massive amounts of government/local government controlled housing, which would also be bad.

Things are too overpriced and heading to collapse as the cost of living is becoming unaffordable. There is zero reason for any of this. There is more then enough land, building materials, available labor, and available water supplies.

When you sign a contract, you keep your promise as much as possible or make arrangements or move to a less expensive place. You don't justify your theft by hoping that the landlord is a rich person who might be ripping people off. we are only accountable for what we do.
