When they have even money to move out give them the money that they paid for rent. Minus household expenses of course. They will have plenty to survive on and will learn the power of trust and compassion. Hopefully inspiring them to continue to live right. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80383054 United States 08/01/2021 06:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Some parents somewhere should have raised two kids better than that. Like with values, understanding financial responsibility and contracts, and, a more important 'how to be a good human' lesson: how their decisions impact others (in this case the landlord and his/her family). Now one set of parents will reinforce the freeloading bad behavior and bail them out, and the landlord is still without his/her income. And yet society wonders how we got in the mess we are in. Technically, the human brain doesn't fully mature until age 25. If they are under 25, they probably don't understand what they just did and think "it's no big deal and it will magically just go away and never show up on a credit report or background check for a mortgage application". |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79313767 WTF did they do with all that money? You'll NEVER get rid of them! They'll live with you FOREVER! THIS. They pulled one over on someone they didn’t know. Imagine how they will manipulate you knowing you’re weak and will fold like a lawn chair. And now they will get free food & electric as well |

They just came over and asked if they could move in for a few months so they could save money. I asked why they did not pay their rent for a year? They both work. They could not give me a straight answer. They both looked ashamed and promised they would stay only a few months. Mind you neither one of them lost their job or became unemployed due to covid. I am so pissed off at them. Quoting: Nojab Landlord came to them on Friday and handed them a 30 day notice. They live in a 100 unit apartment complex. Landlord had 67.....30 day notices to hand out. My husband caved and is letting them stay. What would you have done in this situation? Let them be homeless? I just can’t do that to my daughter. Notice the language OP uses to describe her husband. "He caved." And yet OP actually agrees with husband by saying "...let them be homeless? I just can't do that to my daughter." Now you see why the kids are so fucked up? |

State of financial education: Many money problems Americans face could have been avoided if financial literacy was taught earlier in school. That knowledge helps create a foundation for students to build strong money habits early and avoid many mistakes that lead to a lifelong of money struggles. [link to www.cnbc.com (secure)] |

Huh, interesting question, OP… Kind of raises more questions than it answers though. How did they 1) not lose their jobs, but 2) still not manage to pay rent, and 3) then not have ANY money remaining money afterwards?? Something doesn’t add up. They should give you a full explanation of where their finances are going, along with an actual accounting (depending on how much/little you trust their explanation) as a condition of them staying with you. As for how long you should allow them to stay with you, I don’t know. I suppose that depends on how charitable you and hubby are feeling. |

I want them to admit why. Then if it was because they bought other things, I’d start taking them away. Idk, that’s so tough. Living in an apartment and not paying rent just because has got to be the most liberal thing I’ve ever seen. Curious, did they vote for Biden? They said they just started getting behind and they could never catch up. They both drive nice cars and yes they have nice things. They did say they were paying half the rent for a few months. They have some money saved but did not have enough to pay the full amount to be able to stay. The landlord gave them forms to fill out for the bail out funds but they were denied the money because they did not qualify due to no hardship because of Covid. Idk what to think? did they gain a lot of weight? did they lose alot of weight? yomtvrap |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79313767 United States 08/01/2021 06:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OK OP I'll give you some real advice. Charge them full rent & in 3 months give it back (let them know you're going to give it back). Be strict on collecting that rent from them! In 3 months they will have 1st months-last months-damage deposit. You hand it back to them and tell them GTFO! Let them know from day 1 that they have 3 months. NO MORE! Let them know the entire plan & stick to it. |

It’s not wrong to sometimes support your son and daughter when they make mistakes, especially when they’re young. I’m just more curious about what’s going on with their finances. How the hell can you have a job, fail to pay rent for a year and then STILL have no money is a mystery to me. Unless they’re heroin/crack addicts or some shit. |

They probably have a list of people to ask - you were first. I would NOT let them in if they were mine. I would tell them my place is always there in case of emergency, but unless they have pounded the pavement looking for other shelter it ain't no emergency yet. Do they have any children? Do you suspect drug use? (please dont take offense to this question; just asking as a fellow parent) Did they buy a new car? Go on vacations? They had to do something with that money. |

They are your children, no matter what age. I have done many stupid things in my life, and parents and brother were always there, as my last safety net. But I always got up again afterwards and found a way to support myself (longest was it took me about a year after I quit drugs) The important thing is i think is that you keep have to remind them, what they did was wrong and to get their shit together.. especially you son in law since he is the man of his household. Shame and hurt pride can be a very powerful motivator. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 80383054 United States 08/01/2021 06:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No, the parents should charge them rent AND make them pay the landlord for money owed even if it took them 12 months took do it. The parents should accompany these 20-something, not ready to be adults to the landlord's office to witness them paying the money owed...even if it took 12 months I guarantee this experience would teach them personal responsibility they will not forget. It would also make the landlord whole again and satisfy the legal contract rather than teaching them it's OK to be theives. . |
