One of the designs being considered uses a touch sensor with infrared lights that can be incorporated into the push-start engine button to detect blood alcohol level through the skin.

Mouthwashes containing alcohol would not cause a false positive with those.

Nobody should drive drunk and the law needs to focus on habitual alcoholics that really do drive at dangerously high BAC levels. But if they're going to harass the 0.08'ers then why not consider everything that can sedate people a little bit - all the prescription drugs people are on, weed, even just being tired or distracted driving. Or if you have anger issues, drive like an asshole, PMS, young, etc, etc, etc...

And yes, the 0.08 is really arbitrary and most people driving at that level are not serious dangers, or dangers at all.

Suppose your daughter went on a date, had two glasses of wine over an hour in a half when the guy suddenly attacked her. She runs to her car only to find that it won't fucking turn on. Even if she had nothing to drink, the time it would take to go through the blowing procedure would be too long in an escape situation.

Also, those systems are imperfect and can produce false readings, and need a lot of maintenance and upkeep.

That's what happened with VW a few years back. The emissions were tuned down at the factory and their cars were running more efficiently and Fast. Government can't have that.
