So the people that NEVER drink alcohol have to pay extra for this on their new car, and go thru that motion of blowing in the breathalyzer every time they drive, even though they never drink alcohol......

Yeah, guess I will just not buy any more new cars....most of them are fugly anyways.

I wonder if this is for all electric cars too? They are pushing EVs and not putting in charging stations throughout the country so that people can't move around.

I bet this is just for gas cars.

After my 2nd DUI, I had to install a breathalyzer device and pay a monthly fee for it!

Cost me a small fortune!

Now these a-holes will get it for free UH!

Free? It's going to add $3K (US) to the price of every car.
Add the navigation, self-parking, and levitation and youve got a $100K car

Also in the 2700 page draft is a proposal to tax Americans on auto mileage. You will report miles driven each year on tax form and eventually pay a tax on each mile driven.

As someone who got caught up in the DUI racket twice and other times blew a .08, I'd rather have my car refuse to start until I'm under their BS safety number then pop a DUI because my tail light and headlight were out as with what happened to me. Never pulled over for my driving always some cockamamie that did me in and their .08 is complete bs.

You’re not very smart. For instance, you blow in the device and you got even a tiny bit detected it alerts all police officers in your area and your location gps. You’re fucked because their devices are not accurate anyways even if you’re below.

Follow the money...the company involved in serious lobbying for this inclusion is owned and operated by former federal employees. I kinda of doubt it will make it to the final bill as the car lobby is much stronger, and since it would add a minimum 900 dollars to the price of a new car, they would strongly oppose its inclusion. I guess we shall see

I believe this is already the case in France. Not that all domestic flights in France will be banned by 2030. Unless you have a private place, that is.

I also expect that car rental companies will eagerly hop on this band wagon quite happily. Transport and shipping companies, public transit, Ride Share, Car Share will likely follow suit. Especially companies that to do random drug testing.

Companies that have people operating heavy equipment...will totally do this to limit liability and hold off insurance increases for non compliance. Do you really want someone with a forklift, crane, digger drunk off their asses? Would u be upset if the Dr. performing open heart surgery just had a 4 martini lunch......?

Governments may mandate this for new/learning drivers as here in Ontario they must always have ZERO BAC.

The era of the presumption of innocence (sobriety) is GONE. Thereis no care or consideration if you inherently have a very very high tolerance for alcohol or none at all. The lowest common denominator will be used. Now .8 is the MAXIMUM in Ontario. They want to drop it to .5 or .4 as it is in many parts of the EU. That is about a 1/2 pint of beer for most men.

But not to worry.
Only self driving transports will be allowed in the near future and you will only go where you are "allowed" to go. Most machinery will be run by AI....as will most manufacturing and construction.

Alas, there really won't be many who can afford to buy/rent much of anything when everyone is out of work on basic income allowances. You can have your allotment of government cheese delivered by drone by Amazon or Walmart. Until you die or kill yourself or activate your "euthanasia app"

If there is a shred of decency they will legalize most drugs so you can stupefy yourself enough not to care about any of it while jacked into a VR.

Because this…

Why do you think they’re so hot for self-driving cars and ‘smart’ roads? Very shortly, our personal vehicles will become nothing more than tiny, overly-expensive busses or trains. The average person gets priced out of such a ‘luxury.’ People are forced to use mass transit. That forces people to move to cities. Population control - done.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80550127

Well I'm glad that it will keep you off the road, but it's a bit of a nuisance for those of us who just don't drive if they've been drinking.

But I do agree that BAC is very subjective. Some people are perfectly fine at .08, and others are stupid passout drunk at .04. It should be based on capability to operate the machine.
 Quoting: Depluribus Unum

Bullshit. .04 is 1 beer. I don't know anyone who is drunk on 1 beer, much less 2.

I used one of those drink counter apps once that estimates your BAC based on the alcohol content and frequency just to see where I was with it out of curiosity. I didn't even feel a buzz until the thing said .12 and didn't start to feel drunk until it said .16. So, that would be 4 beers in an hour. I'd say that's quite a bit if you're going out for a night of drinking at the bar. I don't know anyone who goes out and drinks like this.

I would say, if you're drinking 4 beers an hour the problem isn't your driving its that you're a total drunk.

Frankly, a lot of these people who get sloshed at the bar aren't sloshed because they drank at the bar... they drink all day long and then go to the bar and drink some more and then drive home and drink some more.

The police, on the other hand, will sit a couple blocks down from a bar and then look for excuses to pop moderate drinkers who aren't drunk with a DUI while claiming they're "saving the world."
