Bad things have been happening in the world since day 1. Computers have been available for people to do good or bad things on them. That’s the same with your car, eating food, drinking or what you do behind closed doors.

Don’t just hypothesize ‘tracking’.

On the surface this sounds like a good initiative. But an innocent photo of a dad having a bath with his say his 1 year old son could be construed as an abuse image, without any context. Or maybe a teen messing around sending dick pics as a laugh with other teen mates.

Let’s face it, the majority of people reviewing are not going to be well paid and worldly educated. There are massive differences between cultures around the world (surely what starts on th3 US will rolled out everywhere.) Who makes the rules? Who adjudicates? More than likely the reviewers will be under KPI’s to review X number of images an hour. So false-positive will be likely. Just having police investigate would be enough to destroy someone’s reputation. Police leak like a sieve.

I’d like nothing more for child abusers to be caught but I don’t trust big-tech not to abuse the process, the review lists, or have too loose a review process causing many false-positives. There needs to be a grievance process for false-positives to ensure accountability.

Imagine having a work iPhone locked and under review by apple for apparent inappropriate images. Notifications will go to company IT, followed by HR, and that’s it, career over at that company regardless of the facts. “Watercooler gossip. Did you hear Smith from accounting has been suspended for having child porn on his iPhone…. ? Always thought he was a bit weird” And of course once tarred many people will say oh he got off on a technicality, no smoke without fire etc…
