Retrievers are good but australian shepards are smarter and make much better loyal friends.

Dobermann. They are kinda like normal dogs, except they live in 6x fast forward. Super smart, loving, affectionate, gentle, energetic, athletic, watchful, fun. Great dogs

This is really a wide open question wgich creates a bunch of other questions about breeds...your wants and needs...your age...your activity level...your living situation...your monetary ability to meet all the critter's needs like food and medical...your physical ability to potentially have to lift the critter if it's injured/sick.

Beagle. So gentle they use them for medical testing. Comical and expressive features. The only downside is their nose rules them, they will run after any wild thing that catches their fancy.

My australian shepard is 3.5 years old now. He is about 95 pounds (big feller) fixed and is mixed with some other breed. He is a very very beautiful boy and loves people and other dogs too. He is obedient and loyal and spoiled rotten. He is an ace watchdog and doesn't do annoyance barking. He is very smart and adventurous and loves water. Also a great road dog. He is loved by everyone we know and doesn't beg but gets real food when he is hungry. I cannot "truthfully" think of a better dog to have. Big enough to scare off people but friends with everyone and the cats too. He has great intuition of evil people and does not befriend them but barks and let's it be known their intent. I could never replace him.

Hell of a personality

Love german shepard's but they get hip displacia and cripple up which will break your heart. And they don't play well with others. Aussie for the win! We had a german shepard before we got our aussie.

And surprisingly, poodles are awesome. One of the smartest dogs, hypoallegenic, and all sizes save for the tiny teacup types are great. The standard is best but i love the bigger dogs
