Certainly not arguing with the scenarios of marriage you described. (Ofc even biologically it makes sense.)

But you're leaving out the fact that age of consent laws do not - and never did - apply within adult-child marriages. i.e. The laws were only relevant outside of marriage, outside of your scenario.

So the Johns story I guess was not relevant.

Something happened to the NYT article, but 10 years ago quite a few states including Florida permitted that.

I didn't leave it out its just that I've read similar threads before and am aware of the circumstances surrounding the marriage of Charlie & Eunice. Its not really a good example of abuse by child marriage because they did wait until she was 16 (legal age in their state) before having kids. BTW, she stayed married to him for over 60 years until his death. I think if it were my family, I would not be too happy with a bunch of online posters calling my deceased family member a child rapist when that is not what occurred. Since I am aware of the situation, I figured I'd bring that to the table so the record is straight on the issue.

FWIW - within my own family my grandparents were married at 15 & 23, respectively. Nobody has ever claimed that my grandmother was "raped" or otherwise forced into some cover-up marriage. She was already pregnant at the time they were married, had 3 additional children, and stayed married until my Grandmother passed at 81. She wasn't a "helpless wife" either - she became a District Manager for a large corporation and my Grandfather owned a successful business. You have to remember, in that time period it was considered almost the ultimate sin to have a child out of wedlock and some communities even shunned these people and their children.

There is no question that marriage law has been abused to cover for child rape. I'm not even debating that. I think 10 is WAY too young for any adult to be engaging in that behavior with a child.

Its common in mid east. I think even in parts of Africa they like raping kids.

Not sure what they are referring to, but yeah there are several court cases involving immigrants that has gotten off the hook with child rapes.

Even if they get sentenced for jail, it's only like a year or less for the first timer.

If someone argues that consent to marriage as a 10-year-old is somehow less significant than consent to intimate relations, I don't think that's make sense.

It's a life-altering commitment either way.

It seems the delay you described would be for biological reasons (physically safer), not emotional maturity.

But again, I don't see how age of consent laws were "tied in" to marriage, considering they didn't apply under marriage. (EDIT: nvm that's where I misunderstood you)

Well.. I actually wrote a response addressing this but got banned and subsequently unbanned. Asked for a reason but wasn't told why. I don't *think* I hit any of the banned words or said anything particularly ridiculous... but who knows without being told.

I'm not really saying you're wrong per se... but I think its wrong to judge the actions of a prior era against current standards.

You have to understand that at least in the 1930s people were far spread out and few in between. The standards were different. That was a point I was trying to make to you about my grandparents. I'm also aware that I had at least 2 aunts who were married off to neighbor farms in the 1700s when they were 13. Both of them did not have children until they were 17 and 18. I guess what I'm pointing out is that there were other reasons for marriage back then than just sex.

Circling back to my grandparents... I happen to know the reason they consummated the first child was that they were already dating, my great grandparents were aware of this, and my Grandfather was going off to war. If you put this in context, its kinda reasonable. That's why I'm saying, you really cant right out judge this without evidence.

Is 10 too young at any rate? I would say yes, but when the marriages were happening back then, they were not necessarily having sex with their wives at that age and I'm just pointing that out. Like I tried to say earlier, I think to some extent there is an agenda to paint Whites in a bad light.

There is another group that pretty consistently still engages in these practices and not for altruistic reasons. I'll leave it to you to decide who they are.

That is a gross misinterpretation of what happened.

A guy was convicted of aggravated abuse instead of rape because of how the Finnish law is written. He still went to jail. Because of the law he didn't get enough of a sentence. They are trying to change the laws to be more strict.

Most everything in the tweet is a lie. Sex with children is not legal in Finland.
