The Marines were fighting against Japanese soldiers prepared to fight to the last man.

And for the last twenty years Marines have had to fight against the Taliban according to the most restrictive rules ever given to anyone "fighting" a war.

Take away those restrictions and the Taliban would be wiped off the face of the planet.
