THE DEAD SLEEP UNTIL THE RESURRECTION - Didn’t Jesus tell the thief on the cross that they would be in heaven that day?
Text in question: Luke 23:43

“Jesus said to him, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.’ ”

Proof texts: John 20:17; John 19:31–33

The repentance of the thief on the cross is a powerful story indeed. It shows us that conversions can happen at the end of one’s life; that even the vilest criminals will be accepted by God if they come to Him; that no more than a request for salvation made in faith is required by God.

However, it also gives many the impression that paradise in heaven awaits them immediately upon death. The story of the thief on the cross is one of the most widely cited texts to support this idea of life after death. The text does appear to say that both Jesus and the thief will be in paradise after death on that day, the day of their deaths. It’s easy to understand why many people are confused about this text.

In order for the text to be true, as written, then both Jesus and the thief would have to end the day in heaven. Otherwise, Jesus would be lying! Does the rest of the Bible support such a scenario?

Let’s look at John chapter 20, a story that occurs on resurrection Sunday, when Mary Magdalene finds Christ’s empty tomb. She talks with Christ, thinking He is the gardener. When she realizes that He is the risen Lord, she moves to hug him. His response in verse 17 tells us something important about death and the afterlife. The verse reads:

“Jesus said to her, ‘Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.”’”

Did you catch that? According to the words of Christ Himself, He had not gone to heaven on Friday, the day He died. He still had not been there as of Sunday morning! Jesus could not have been telling the thief that they would be in heaven together that very day. He would have been speaking a lie.

How, then, can we understand the text in Luke 23?

The problem actually lies with the placement of the comma. As it reads, the text says both men would be in heaven on Friday. We’ve seen from the Bible that this cannot be true. But if you move the comma one word to the right, it becomes:

“Jesus said to him, ‘Assuredly, I say to you today, you will be with Me in Paradise.’ ”

Indeed, Jesus did tell the thief on that day that paradise awaited him. God commonly uses phrases like “I tell you this day…” in the Bible. See Deuteronomy 7:11, 8:1, 9:3, 10:13, 13:18, and 15:5 for some examples.

Is it wrong to “change” the Bible in this way? In fact, the original Greek manuscript contained no punctuation at all! If we were to read the passage in Luke according to the manner in which it was originally written, it would look like this:

ANDJESUSSAIDTOHIMASSUREDLYISAYTOYOUTODAYYOUWILLBEWITHMEINPARADISE

The commas, periods, quotation marks, and even the spaces between the words were added to the Bible by the various translators over time. In light of the other biblical evidence, it becomes clear that the comma, which was not part of the inspired original writing, was misplaced by a translator and copied by everyone else subsequently.

Christ did not go to heaven at His death because He spent the Sabbath day resting in the grave. The repentant thief also went to the sleep of death and is awaiting the return of Jesus Christ with the rest of the sleeping saints.

Re: THE DEAD SLEEP UNTIL THE RESURRECTION - Didn’t Jesus tell the thief on the cross that they would be in heaven that day?
Well he certainly didn't tell him yesterday.

Paradise means garden and refers to Abraham's Bosom in the earth, not heaven. See the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. Moving the comma changes the meaning, it should not be done or understood with the comma moved.

St. Luke 4:21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Move the comma two places and it becomes a question:

St. Luke 4:21 And he began to say unto them this day, Is this scripture fulfilled in your ears?

It just feels more satisfying to think Jesus said, Today you will be with me in paradise, rather than ‘,Today you will fall asleep for thousands of years until the end of the age. ‘

There seems to be quite a few example of Jesus saying, “I say to you…” in the Bible, but that would be the only example of him saying, “I say to you TODAY…” At least that I know of.

Assuming paradise refers to heaven, since the only 2 other places in the Bible that use the word paradise refers to heaven, that would mean that the thief was raptured to heaven before Jesus who, as was pointed out, didn't go up to heaven yet. Assuming still that the thief was raptured up with everyone else worthy in Abraham's Bosom, which would imply they were judged which doesn't occur until the last day, Revelation which was written decades later speaks of a first and second resurrection. If the first happened on the day Jesus died, then the wording should have been, Blessed is he who hath taken part in the first resurrection, past tense, since it already occured.

Paradise in that verse therefore does not refer to heaven but Abraham's Bosom.

It sure beats being alive and awake in hell.

1 day is as a thousand years in the spirit realm. Imagine having no sense of time passing.

Ever slept for a long time and woke up and felt like no time passed? Today, you're going to go to sleep in Abraham's Bosom rather than awaking in hell, because thou hast believed on me. That's sounds good.

Re: THE DEAD SLEEP UNTIL THE RESURRECTION - Didn’t Jesus tell the thief on the cross that they would be in heaven that day?
only the body sleeps

rich man and Lazarus and Abraham

all wide awake and aware of the situation in Hades

rich man on the "torment" side of Hades
- where the unrighteous dead go

Lazarus on the Paradise / Abraham's Bosom side of Hades
- where the righteous dead went

send Lazarus with some water to cool my tongue...

a great gulf fixed between the two sides

send Lazarus to my brothers so they will not come to this awful place

Paradise / Abraham's bosom was emptied

when He led captivity free
and took all the righteous dead from Paradise into the heavens

only the "Torment" side of Hades continues to be populated with unrighteous dead

every righteous dead from the resurrection and ascension onward
absent from the body
present with the Lord

the trib. saints call out from under the altar
how long until you avenge our blood?

no one is "unconscious" until the resurrection of the body

everyone who has exited this life
is wide awake and aware of where they are

The misunderstanding comes from making an assumption, and that assumption is that Paradise = Heaven, it does not. When people die they all go to Sheol. In Sheol, there is an area known as paradise, see the parable of Abraham's bosom, and separated by a great abyss is hell. The dead are not sleeping in graves, they are fully aware in either paradise or hell. Thus, Jesus words mean exactly what they say. In, Jesus's case, he went to paradise, but he had not yet ascended to heaven, two completely different places.

no this whole setup was from before the foundation of the world
Adam and Eve were created to fall
that was the plan before even the heavens and the earth were created

There are so many who are going to be supremely disappointed when their judgment sends them off to the Lake of Fire.

They include those who:

-claim or believe all one has to do is request salvation or profess belief in Jesus Christ

-perform or think in other forms of heresy- such as...

-are waiting for a pre-trib rapture that isn't coming

-do not understand what it means and takes to be vigilant and spiritually wise enough to identify and evade the mark

-make up their own covenant and expect the Lord to adhere to it.

If only getting to "heaven" were as simple as verbalizing a commitment to the Lord.
Instead- it is very much exactly as we are all warned in Rev 3:21

To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne

Which most seem to ignore or miss. Jesus didn't "overcome" divorce or drug addiction. He also didn't overcome a simple repentance. He overcame hardcore pain, suffering, persection and death.

You will too if you expect to be among the few.

You best repent, get saved and THEN remove yourself from living in Satan's system (the modern world) and live as sin free as possible 24/7 without going back...THEN avoid the MotB...and prove your true faith by accepting persecution and execution over that mark.

We are told this in Matthew 7:12-13

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Understand? No shortcuts or half efforts will cut it for the final generation.

And referencing any Bible but the KJV when it comes to English interpretation is a bad idea.
If it isn't in The Bible then it is just conspiracy theory.

Re: THE DEAD SLEEP UNTIL THE RESURRECTION - Didn’t Jesus tell the thief on the cross that they would be in heaven that day?
Note, in case anyone has already mentioned this ….sorry. I haven’t read anything past the first page of posts before I am posting this…..

So you also have to stop and think…….God’s time perception is extremely different than man’s time perception . Like 1 day equaling 1000 years as an example.

I think that it’s more than likely that as far as “man’s perception” of time , the dead stay dead and in the ground untill Judgement Day, when The Lord commands everyone to rise for judgement.

But as far as how God himself and ALL of “the dead” may see time…….: I think it may be INSTANT …. Meaning , as soon as you die , time is no longer a construct you are bound by. I think that as soon as you die you are instantly materialized into The Judgement and your fate decided.

Hence when Jesus told the other man hanged about them both going to paradise. when they both I had passed they would see one another almost instantaneous to them as far as their sense of time having passed……. Just my own thoughts and theory on how time perception and it’s passing, relate to Judgement Day and end times

I see you bumped the thread.

Most of the answers are very close to being correct.

Yes, Paradise is the same as Abraham's Bosom.

No, Abraham's Bosom was not 'emptied out'. It still exists.

The saved are there resting as can be seen in this verse...

Revelation 6:11
"And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled."

BTW...

The Throne Room and Abraham's Bosom are one and the same.

It is also called the Third Heaven.

Your assuming Time exists...

If it doesn't..it all happens at once and is instantaneous...

These are concepts, that Romans, and such, wouldn't understand.

While its nice to try and decipher the bible as a text..

There is no accounting for science, spirit, and other phenomenons, you, or those in the text, dont understand...

For the thief...it might very well be TODAY. Who are you to say otherwise?

Heaven obviously exists outside of time, or is timeless...its ALWAYS present..So Jesus didn't lie to him.
Always remember these words: Work hard, study well, and eat and sleep plenty! That is the Turtle Hermit way! We must master the art of peace in addition to the art of war!

yes the more I think about it the more I think its happening instantaneously to the dead which seems like a lot of time to us here.
