It’s the way people bartered and lived for all of human history up until about the industrial revolution. It’s important to think real long and hard about what you need vs what you desire. As far as skills are concerned; learning new skills (how to start a fire, find water, build things from raw materials, fix machinery, Hotwire a car, escape from handcuffs, pick a lock, etc) is the most important prepping anyone can do. Things can be taken from you, Skills can not. If you are escaping a disaster area and someone takes all your food, water and supplies…the. The skills you have will allow you to acquire new items. Even things that are currently illegal like those I mentioned above can save your life. If you are kidnapped and handcuffed in a vehicle but you know how to escape handcuffs and Hotwire a car then you can save your own life and escape your attacker. You can even pay ex military that own companies to teach you these skills if you do desire. Most important rule of prepping…knowledge and skills are more important than your gear. |

Agreed, historically it's not new thinking, but for those brough up in a highly homogenized society, it is a new way of thinking. I’ve been working on processing multiple locally available foods into alternative flours. As long as I have electricity, I can do larger amounts with my mill and dehydrator but can also solar dehydrate and grind by hand if necessary. So far, I’ve perfected my taro processing. Next are green bananas, breadfruit and Job’s Tears. “If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.” Thich Nhat Hanh, Being Peace "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you." - Job 12:7,8 "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." - Hunter S. I’ve been working on processing multiple locally available foods into alternative flours. As long as I have electricity, I can do larger amounts with my mill and dehydrator but can also solar dehydrate and grind by hand if necessary. Quoting: Rev Woo-Woo So far, I’ve perfected my taro processing. Next are green bananas, breadfruit and Job’s Tears. Excellent, I'm very impressed. What are the tools and basic process needed? Hawaiian taro (kalo) corms are HUGE and take a long time to cook. Traditionally, it’s baked overnight, underground. More modern day process is to steam it over night in large barrels and wood fires. Steaming or boiling just 3 large ones at home on a stove can take several hours. I cut down this process to about 40 minutes by steaming in an Instant Pot. The corms are then cooled and peeled and ready to make poi or flour. For flour, I grate them and spread the shreds on my dehydrator trays. 2 hours at 135F and they’re good and dry. It’s then just a simple process of running it through my grain mill. I’m using a 10 quart Instant Pot and a Mock Mill 200. Haven’t yet discovered the perfect method for poi yet (other than the traditional pounding method) Too thick for my food processor - kills the motor and though my Ninja does fairly well, there are still small chunks and it’s motor also heats up. Next experiment will be with a Champion juicer. Just need to order a part to get it up and running again.
