There are numerous flood photos from various US locations with water gushing up from sink drains. I don’t recall ever seeing such a thing.

This is what I received from my contact in NYC. Was sent 5 hours back.

Freak weather.

We had a great first of September. Soaked up like that. Until this morning, there was no forecast, but then the rain began, which went unnoticed into a downpour that did not stop for many hours. Then a tornado hit southern NJ (! ) who destroyed a lot of houses on his way. Then New York and then again New Jersey flooded the hell out of it. Authorities declare a state of emergency, phones bursting with flood warnings, roads blocked, and the internet fills with dramatic photos of water-filled basements, sunken streets, floating cars and subway waterfalls. Tomorrow all of this will be in the news. Google's map looks a little apocalyptic right now. It's definitely not worth the drive. Tomorrow is clear, sunny and + 24 C.

Just think some of those fire fighters out there saving people right now have homes are doing the same thing while unattended. These guys usually have shifts that last days so when things slow down for them they have to go home and deal with all that crap. These heros don't get enough credit.

As I've listened to the FDNY scanner tonight I've heard a couple incidents where they was unable to save some of the victims. Some may think there was lack of remorse or sadness in their voices announcing such unfortunate events. But the reality is there isn't time for that as there is somebody else they got to go do their best to save. That is the other mess they'll go home when their shift ends and they finally have time to collect their thoughts.

I was just thinking about the aftermath of this: when people call their insurance to make a claim and are denied because they didn't purchase FLOOD INSURANCE.

That's right, it is a separate policy. Living in Florida we are all warned to purchase flood insurance and it is in fact mandated if you live within a 100 year flood plain.

I really feel sorry for these people who will lose everything .

I think the jury is still out on who had/has the most deaths. We’ve still not gotten a full picture on exactly what happened in Louisiana.

Bumping for late breaking aftermath reporting of yesterday's Ida doom.

OP: FYI, you can use the edit feature to update thread title to include Northeast record obliterating floods.

It's beautiful in South Jersey this morning.

Feels like Fall - right on schedule. Almost chilly outside.

Spent the morning watching the hummingbirds. They survived the rain just fine. They won't be here much longer.

Hope you get it back soon and that there wasn't top much damage.

Ours stayed on. I was surprised to see no trees down in my yard.

School isn't in session yet. We start the day after Labor Day ... we have to get that extra week or two in down the shore after the PA people go back home ;) hf

New York is far too close to the coast to be a safe place
to live. The cost to rebuild after such damage is not worth it. Time to abandon NYC and relocate everyone
there to the midwest.

So what’s going on now? Anyone have any reports? Has most of the water receded in the flooded areas?

I’m glad you did not see any damages in your yard. We didn’t have any trees down either, only my three little fig trees were knocked down but they are in pots. chuckle

All the remaining power outages in NJ are JP&L and PSE&G.

That means they are North of here ... South Jersey has Atlantic City Electric.

In South Jersey, I expect local authorities to evacuate individual neighborhoods here and there due to dam break worries. All that water is coming down the rivers toward the ocean, so there will be small, local flood events for a couple days.
