Materials to get lights on are getting scarce. USA Southeast I'm a Twenty four year electric distribution utility employee (to whom you pay your "light bill") and some of our materials and supplies are getting stupidly long delivery times. Big substation transformers from one of our vendors are 80 weeks out. A year and a half plus two weeks. All American vendors are creeping out to 40+ I've heard. Polemount transformers are 20-24 weeks. These are the ones that you see in front of your house. They get damaged by lightning and if a pole is broken by the wind they'll get bodyslammed into the ground and ruined. A neighboring utility to mine has stated that if a major derecho event or tornado hits, there'll be months-long outages because they don't have in stock and can't get the material to restore service. Even commodities such as bolts and insulators and AAC and ACSR conductors are getting scarce. We're told raw materials are in short supply. Have yourself a generator, and have it where you can safely run your house as you see fit. My goal is to keep a couple little freezers going for as many weeks as possible..." how many pole mount Transformers are kept in stock? One of our lineman here told me they only keep a few on hand, he also said pretty much the same thing you did about keeping the generator on the ready, he is worried about ice storms this Winter, the winter Weather forecast (almanac) calls for higher then normal Snow totals with above average temps, which for us is most likely very heavy wet snow or Ice here in the Mountains, most of the time it's cold enough for the powdery snows and is usually just a minor pain but Ice storms and all these trees is a whole different ball game. I figure a BMI of about 22 to 23 is close to ideal for these times. For most people anyway, owing to the imprecision of using the BMI. I've always thought the best body type for this would be a football defensive linemen. Plenty of fat to burn in the lean times, but strong as an ox and in good shape. Blue Horseshoe loves GLP |

I like having tealights though to put in tin lanterns I carry around and put in different rooms. Plus they look nice. :) Those hurricane lamps, the old school ones, are tough to find now though! Natural gas is a good idea for a whole house generator. No need to replenish fuel just pay the bill. It would be great if you could get your hands on a tri-fuel military generator. Then you can run pretty much run diesel, gasoline, natural gas or propane thru it and have power. Good luck. Great Idea!! Maybe call The Tollybon if they have any spares the can donate. |
