Message Subject Any GLPers own or have access to CDV-715 Geiger Meter? People in Spain are measuring high levels of ionizing radiation with this apparatus.

60 year old electronics with bad capacitors.

Readings that high would about kill you within a few minutes.

Wouldn’t a bad capacitor result in a lack of response at all? I agree with the lethality of the values being metered, but these come from at least four different persons and meters (two brands of meter, three if you include the UV meter of the last video), are all of them failing the same way?

Yes bad Caps will result in a non existant or erroneous reading.
The old meters used old batteries or cardboard construction. Heavy leakage and corrosion.
They are a beta and gamma radiation monitor. They will not alert on x-ray or microwave radiation. Not good for checking a microwave oven for instance.
There are other dosimiter types which are small pencil type units for personal monitoring. Also sensors which can be attached anywhere and analyzed by a lab for exposure over time, Monthly or weekly.
I have one at work and it is rairly used. It does have to be calibrated annually. Which we have lapsed on because of such little usage.

The sensor does not detect anything after moving a Yard or Meter outside of the source area given such a low source. You would have to have a high field. Of milli rankens per hour. Think of an atomic bomb level of exposure. The odds of detecting anything in your back yard are almost impossible to get an accurate reading. Plant life would be the first evidence of long term exposure. Underdeveloped leaves and dying for no just cause.

Has been ages since I messed around with mine. I also have the ludlum pancake probe detector that connects to the ludlum geiger survey meter which picks up alpha, beta, and gamma.
