In other words, IT'S A TRAP. The only sane thing to do with that money is to bank it in whatever you feel is the most responsible way possible so that when they raise taxes next year, you have something to pay the extra burden with (having gotten your refund ahead of time). Quoting: Anonymous Coward 293715I suppose passing out shackles would have been to obvious, huh? I would actually prefer to get my taxes ALL back for the next 20 years. This way I can elect how I'd invest it vice the government. Also, if it is known or calculated that the dollar will retreat further, I'd buy up other assets with it. This way, the value wouldn't be too dilluted. |

User ID: 335844 United States 01/18/2008 10:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you look at the past "recessions" you will notice a pattern with the declines. It doesn't decline every day, it'd be too obvious. This past recession (2001 ish) you saw market drops every few days and market rises every few days. In the end, the overall market would decrease, but ever so slightly as to not make people panic. The key is to understand how recessions work with the market. As of the moment, the DOW has gone from around 14000 to about 12200. Yet they will tell you, oh 10% market correction is normal. You have to look at the long term trend. Today it will be up, perhaps up for two days. The big boys need the smaller boys to increase volume so they can unload their shares on the public. If there are no bidders, then you can't be a seller. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 304376 United States 01/18/2008 10:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am watching market "internals" advancing stocks verses losing stocks. They tell a better story than the DOW, S&P500 & NASDAQ. They are almost negative (more losing stocks than winners.) Unless a interest rate reduction fairy comes along soon I do not think the PPT can pump this up today unless they buy the heavier weighted index stocks all day.........Ray |

User ID: 310964 United States 01/18/2008 10:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know many people are concerned about the stock market and will be watching the numbers. Quoting: 2XSecretAgentThought I would start a thread for all those who are interested in keeping up with what happens today. Would not watching the tele or perhaps the market channels be a wee bit faster to get the hubbub. Some of us still have jobs and do not have access to a tv. I appreciate hearing what some people here have to say about all this, too. We've been getting a dozen or more threads every morning about what the dow is doing - I thought a preemptive thread might consolidate some of that. Thank you Agent. User ID: 8107 United States 01/18/2008 10:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well, the consumer index is up which is a bit of a pleasant surprise. Also, our beloved Decider-in-Chief is going to address the nation today to talk about the "principles" of the economic stimulus approach, which could well be the Magic $800 we've been hearing about. It's at 11:50 EST. Here's the alert from my old home-town newspaper: President Bush plans to announce "principles" of economic stimulus package at 11:50 a.m. ET. To view live streaming video of this event on the Web, go to [link to www.washingtonpost.com] Where's the EVIDENCE, Jim? |

Even the ALLMIGHTY BOEING is being affected...their stock is bullshit and their books are cooked MORE than all the other companies combined. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 357549Gee, it's always great to get additional information from a knowledgeable, well-read, and educated financial analyst such as good old Professor Anonymous Coward 357549. I got a good piece of my "bullshit" stock when it was around $25 or so. You stick to dumpster diving; I'll stick to stocks and real estate, and we'll both be quite content, I'm sure, with how our finances turn out. Where's the EVIDENCE, Jim? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2901How do you know the Dow won't hit 10,000 again? Donald Trump was on TV last night saying that we are in a recession, which I believe. The Dow lost over 300 points yesterday, and is currently only at +68.61 which makes it still down from Fridays close. Anonymous Coward User ID: 52170 United States 01/18/2008 11:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Boeing is unchanged, but has gone from 107 in September to about 79 now. If you owned about two thousand shares, which might be typical for a long-term employee with a 401(k), it means you lost about $56,000 over the past 4 months. Add to that a hit of maybe $30-50 thousand on the value of your home, and if you were within a year of retirement, you might be changing your plans. Quoting: Duncan KunzI'm planning on retiring in about three or four years. If the stock and the home values don't go back up in that time, I will be p*ssed (and poor). Do most people have their 401K in Boeing stock? Wouldn't they have it in a diversified fund? |
