Cumbre Vieja volcano post eruption phase! Time to say goodbye for volcano-thank you for all support :)

One of the Spanish live feeds, can't remember which one losing track at this point, had a ticker at the bottom, said meteorologist say it is unlikely, but will not rule out, that acid rain will fall on populated areas. Once it hits the ocean water. What direction is the wind blowing, hopefully not where everyone is evacuating??

Abstract.
Geological evidence suggests that during a future eruption, Cumbre Vieja Volcano on the Island of La Palma may experience a catastrophic failure of its west flank, dropping 150 to 500 km 3 of rock into the sea. Using a geologically reasonable estimate of landslide motion, we model tsunami waves produced by such a collapse. Waves generated by the run-out of a 500 km 3 (150 km 3) slide block at 100 m/s could transit the entire Atlantic Basin and arrive on the coasts of the Americas with 10-25 m (3-8 m) height.

Unfortunately we do NOT have information as to if with the vents being opened up the South West side part of the island is continuing to INFLATE!!

The satellite data is providing that to the volcanologists ... but like Government Bueaucrats everywhere it is "Special" to them thus it becomes SECRET FROM THE PUBLIC.

"IF" the inflation is continuing that would of course mean the rock bonds that hold the island together are being broken in places and severely stretched in other places.

It is highly unlikely (as in almost impossible) that island is going to break apart unless those bonds that hold the risk area to the rest of the island ARE broken or severely weakened by stretching.

One poster a number of pages back stated that in that 1949 Eruption, which caused that 2 1/2 mile long separation of the island at the surface, that the block we are concerned about actually dropped a few feet (12'? - can't find the post now). I have NOT read that anywhere else but in his post.

I have been unable to confirm if part of the island did slip down vertically in that 1949 Eruption event BUT "IF" true that would indicate that many of the rock bonds holding the island together are already broken, which of course increases the chance of it slipping down IF more bonds can be broken AND the joint invovled gets lubricated.

I am NOT a geologist, though I love geology, so take this FWIW

If ANYBODY sees any NEW and CURRENT data about the "Inflation" of the island PLEASE post it immediately!! That data may be critical for us to make a judgement if this event has the real risk of going south in a big way.

(also be nice to see if there are any linkable reports about part of the island slipping down in the 1949 event)
