The animation a few pages back shows most of Florida under water, or completely underwater if the slide is big enough. Best bet is to get on a boat and get out to sea.
 Quoting: LooneyBin

How are you going to survive 100ft plus waves if you’re out to sea in a small boat? Doesn’t seem logical.

Or are you saying get out to sea and ahead of things prior to the event?
 Quoting: Eyeball Replacement

Might just be a 2-3 ft sudden swell out in a coupla thousand feet of ocean. Check out displacements necessary to detect Hawaii tsunami's a few thousand miles out....

Of course that 3 foot swell would look strange since it'd be moving 500-600 MPH.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77316774

That 3 ft. high wall of water might break up your boat at that speed. Probably will.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79110597

But it wouldn't be a wall. that's the reason for getting out into deeper water.

the wave length will be hundreds, if not thousands, of metres long, so although the wave is racing at 600 miles an hour, it would feel as though the whole ocean rises a few feet over a short while, maybe upto a minute and then it would go back down in a similar timeframe.

Waves only become walls once they reach the shallower ridges near the coastline where the top of the waves moves faster than the bottom and so rises up over itself.

I don't think they would tell anybody me until the highways are full.

One thing you can do right now is open your Google maps and save maps offline of the areas that you will move through to evacuate. This will come in handy if or when mobile data is swamped during aass evacuation.

In Florida, if you are on west coast get to Gainesville then hit 441 if time is tight, that runs through Starke which should be safe zone as it's highest elevation in Florida.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80384234

The highest elevation in Florida? That's not a guarantee of safety.

Someone, somewhere mentioned a 'screw' like pattern in the activity.

14:20:34 9km 2.5
14:15:41 8km 2.5
14:14:19 9km 2.3
14:11:43 9km 2.2
14:06:36 6km 2.1

That close enough, cause I think that's a screw pattern.

The waves miles and miles out to sea are nothing but a ripple they don't become large until they get within 10 miles of the coast. the slope of the inland route controls the height of the wave.
The retreating water near the shore is what turns into the turbulent height. You're looking at waves anywhere from 75' tall to 300'
 Quoting: Reluctant energy

Righ. The waves don't always become huge flat faced cresting waves either...depends upo the abruptness of the runup. Shelf dropoffs creat big faced cresting waves...

From Link:

[link to www.nationalgeographic.com (secure)]

"• A tsunami may be less than a foot (30 centimeters) in height on the surface of the open ocean, which is why they are not noticed by sailors. But the powerful shock wave of energy travels rapidly through the ocean as fast as a commercial jet. Once a tsunami reaches shallow water near the coast it is slowed down. The top of the wave moves faster than the bottom, causing the sea to rise dramatically."

Heading out to open ocean might not be a bad strategy.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77316774

If you leave far enough ahead of time.
 Quoting: Eyeball Replacement

9 hours is plenty of time to get out of FL. I’m basing this on others’ ignorance of on-going events for most of the drive. This allows you to high-tail it up an interstate ( tho I’d probably take the turnpike as it’s in the middle of the state) and be pretty far north before the panicking hoardes catch on that something is wrong and take to the highways.
Quoting: Deplorable NO MORE Michele B

That won't work. At the top of the state you are stuck with I75 or I95. Back roads no help.

So 22.3 million people on two roads. Have seen the gridlock even during hurricanes.

The US East coast should have an 8 hour advance from the time the mountain crashes into the sea, how many people will have time to move 20 miles inland?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78592355

You better go more than 20 miles if you're in south Florida.
 Quoting: zeumeuxt

South Florida is very low and already partly flooded with swamps, it won't take much.

Guess I'm old and cynical, but I don't care too much about the folks who live on the Atlantic coast. They chose to live there for the beauty of the beaches, the "East coast experience", and other reasons. If they were truly educated they would have learned that there is always the possibility of tsunamis happening where ocean water touches terra firma.
They put their lives in harms way and when the poo poo hits the fan they act like they are the ones who have been put out. If they moved to the center of the US there would be very few ways to die from mother nature. Sure, tornados are abundant in the mid west, but they are like hitting a mosquito with a two hundred pound anvil. Very few folks die from tornados every year, which is good because of the way the information gets out, quickly. When a tsunami is fixing to hit the east coast all roads will be clogged and the skies will be filled with planes heading west. The little guy will be left watching the water quickly hit him in the face as his car sits in a hundred mile long parking lot.
 Quoting: Tynyyn

So you think the entire eastern seaboard is a monolithic “experience”? Extreme heat & cold kills more in the US than Hurricanes with cold being the biggest killer. Besides flash flooding can happen anywhere.

You really think natural disasters can’t happen anywhere? I’ve lived all over the US & every single distinct region & climate had a natural disaster risk.

Based on my observations, during the day, it is entering a cyclical pattern. So this is good news from a doom perspective. The repeating pattern is in almost the exact same geographical location.

The bad news is the intervals are still too far apart, and it's still too deep. Although it is definitely approaching the 7km range. So don't go shaving any tomatoes at this time.

If it is forming into a cyclical pattern, it will do the next one in an hour or so. Then the frequency should slowly drop until boom.

Maybe at 6 o'clock.
Maybe at 8 o'clock.
At 12 o'clock it formed a semi-pattern.
At 2 o'clock it formed a definite pattern.

3:30 - 4:00 should be the next one, but I will be close to sleep land at that time.

If it as 3:30, it will happen faster as the intervals are shortening quickly. As in I might sleep through it.

If it is 4:00, it could be a day or two before boom time.

And if you gentlemen keep pacing that way, you will wear a hole in my floor. The DOOM will come when the doom is ready.

Edit: Correction, I can see that exact spot has semi patterns earlier. It's also the epicenter of that 3.9 on the title. If this was anywhere else, I would say 'aftershocks', but after reading about the screw pattern. I would say 'damned if I know'.

It is interesting quickly scrolling through the data from the start to the present. Bottom to the top.

The activity rolls in waves, or is pulsing. The alarming thing is that since the start, the activity has been increasing generally and the general trend is a growth in the scale of the earthquakes.

Wonder how this might change things -

POSSIBLE EARTH-DIRECTED CME: During the early hours of Sept. 13th (~0200 UT), a dark filament of magnetism on the sun exploded. The blast hurled a CME into space, and maybe toward Earth. Initial modeling by NOAA suggests a near miss (or glancing blow) on Sept. 16-17. The fact that the CME overlaps at least two other CMEs makes unraveling its trajectory tricky. Stay tuned for additional analysis.

Remember the earthquake swarm for Yellowstone a few years back?

Earthquakes were of a similar magnitude.

Looks to me like a similar event is happening, with nothing to show for it.

Bok Tower Gardens, in Lake Wales (near Naples) sits a whopping 205 feet above sea level.
This is also among the highest points of land in all of Florida.

Imagine the scramble stampede as panic mode masses converged on the precious few high points in Florida.
Hamburger Hill would be nothingburger hill by comparison.

Trying to drive out from south Florida through all the slow car chaos between you and high enough ground would be futile and likely end in a drowning death.

If I was in South Florida, I would either hire or heist a small plane and fly toward the Appalachian mountains, making an emergency landing on a rural town airfield, corn field or golf course.

If that didn't pan out, I would hire or steal a large fast fishing boat. If you could power out into the Gulf a few hours to the north west, the Florida peninsula would be barrier reef enough to make any spillover waves survivable in a seaworthy cabin cruiser.

A retreat by water is the option that panicked masses who are retreating from water would likely overlook.
Not saying that this would be a pleasure boating experience.

Something would go 'berserk in the Gulf of Mexico,' but not so postal berserk that it sinks a French submarine.

Lake Wales is more Central Florida; just south of I-4 corridor. (Tampa-Orlando). All the experienced boaters along the Gulf would absolutely think to head to sea. Miami’s only real hope, besides riding it out in high rises, would be trying to head across the Glades to attempt a Gulf side evac towards higher ground/buildings. Reinforced concrete structures in Indonesian tsunami did okay after being damaged by the preceding earthquake.

Getting a ton of private planes off on short notice w likely increased commercial & military air traffic would be interesting.

The animation a few pages back shows most of Florida under water, or completely underwater if the slide is big enough. Best bet is to get on a boat and get out to sea.

How are you going to survive 100ft plus waves if you’re out to sea in a small boat? Doesn’t seem logical.

Or are you saying get out to sea and ahead of things prior to the event?

Wave slows down & heights increase as ocean depth becomes shallower. Wave is fast moving & smaller in deep water.

A lot of variables for you though, are you Gulf side heading 40mls inland along panhandle or Atlantic side heading 40 miles towards Gulf. If you’re not north of I-4 there aren’t good options, imho. High rise, plane or exp boater.

A couple neighbors have butt fans (gliders) they fly around on the weekends. That suddenly looks more appealing.
