It’s important to remember this particular volcano has erupted many times throughout recorded history, with the latest being in 1971 (and 1949 prior to that). Just because the volcano may blow does not mean the entire island is going to break off. And if the island did break off, which is unlikely, it may not even cause the massive waves that are possible but not guaranteed. Take some deep breaths and pray. Just last December people were worried about this scenario but nothing came of it. With that being said, I have had a bad feeling about this for some time. If you live in the danger zone, pay close attention and have a reliable escape route. Make friends with some pilots.

not for nothing but given the events of the last two years...we can't and shouldn't discount the possibility of anything. it's best for those on the coast to be prepared just in case. I'd rather have a gun and not need it then need it and not have it

She could also pop without fracturing… and then a week later fracture.

Unpredictable

If there are any alerts for your phone I would subscribe and be very ready just in case. But then again you should always be ready for that thief in the night.

Especially when it’s a mountain on fire..

Previous eruptions were effusive in nature.Just lava coming out of vents. And it created instability and visible crack along Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge .Best scenario is nothing happening but with these quakes non stop eruption risk is rising every day.

I have a problem with some of these estimates of
The tsunami that would hit the east coast
The kinetic energy would dissipate over the distance and spread over the Atlantic basin
Plus the opposing currents would act like speed bumps...
 Quoting: Apocalypse now

Here is an accountant, with some knowledge of physics. Just a guess, but according to the rules of fluid dynamics a wave in the ocean must have a laminar flow effect, with turbulence only in the region of contact with the ground, and therefore must preserve the momentum.... this would explain why the wave does not dissipate until it collides with something solid.
You know those ball pendulums? Newton's pendulum.
And do you know that example of dominoes lined up from a normal size to one the size of a building? A tsunami is like this, the energy is already accumulated in the liquid, so it only takes a little push to release it.

The moon and Saturn conjoin on 9/16. 9/17 the moon and Jupiter.. CME to impact the earth then.. the great rod is still limp today for large earthquakes but ya never know lol. .. we will just have to wait and see.. Great thread!!5a

Could you survive this by going up a skyscraper
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76416600

Depends on the architecture of the building...where it
positioned in the line-up of other buildings in front of it
...lots of variables.

I wouldn't bet my life on a building. I'd just get out of
the way! lol!

cheers

Some Yes.
Some No.

IF the tsunami is large any skyscraper built on Sand or a "Floating Foundation" probably will not survive the side forces that a very large tsunami will place on it. If the building is anchored into bedrock it has a much better chance of surviving.

To see how unstable skyscrapers built on a floating foundation are just google San Francisco's "Millennium Tower" ... that floating foundation skyscraper was already leaning about 22 inches to one side, and it hadn't been hit yet with an earthquake!! (the repair work just started ... and over the last few weeks has caused it to sink another inch on one side and to lean another 5" at it's top)

The problem is with deformation ,the terrain inflates .Imagine something pushing the terrain upward and being hot mass.If lava mixes with water then we have very serious eruption .But deformation itself can cause troubles sliding the part of island to the water

Yeah but I was wrong as well in dismissing what was happening.

This is fascinating to watch. Hopefully it will not go to the explosive point, I think that would produce the worst case scenario as far as deformation and possible collapse into the sea but who knows.

The deformation has been happening for some time and it's getting worse. The sad thing about LaPalma is it is much like Yellowstone. It's not a case of if but a case of when.
