is that kinda like the Chernobyl second explosion theory where the "lava" hitting water would cause the thermal explosion because of the instant super heating?
 Quoting: Disenfranchised Godzilla1980

The problem is with deformation ,the terrain inflates .Imagine something pushing the terrain upward and being hot mass.If lava mixes with water then we have very serious eruption .But deformation itself can cause troubles sliding the part of island to the water
 Quoting: Mister Pillarr

so if it where to slide like Mt St Helens would that cause a significant tsunami or we talking about a landslide that would make that pale in comparison?
 Quoting: Disenfranchised Godzilla1980

Land mass size of Manhattan would slide to water in worst case scenario .I don't know how big was land mass of Mt St Helens landslide (I know it was huge landslide one the biggest )
 Quoting: Mister Pillarr

Landslide so large it virtually stopped the flow of the Columbia river that is deep and miles wide in many places. The Columbia is like the mighty Mississippi, but compressed through a mountain keyhole called The Gorge.

And the river is not near the mountain, but rather about a 40 minute drive due East of St. Helens.

I have some of that too. I admit that the thought of a catastrophic earthquake, eruption and collapse - and ensuing huge wave - doesn't seem likely enough to want to worry about. Even more so when so many of the other moving parts of America and the world are going tits up.

Mt St Helens doesn't even come close in comparison. Additionally at Mt St Helens it was only a flank of the volcano that actually created slid and it wasn't into a ocean. If you look at a satellite image of the island you can see what looks like a spine almost directly in the middle running up towards the volcano crater. This is where the problem is. This is where the deformation is occurring

IF the right circumstances occur you are talking about 1/2 of a 20 mile islands land mass slipping into the ocean. The unknowns are of course, would be if it all goes and if so does it do so slowly or rapidly.

The worst case of course would be the entire 1/2 rapidly falling into the ocean. The modern World has never experienced anything like this and the death and destruction would be at frightening levels....

Cumbre Vieja Volcano -- Potential collapse and tsunami at
La Palma, Canary Islands

Abstract. Geological evidence suggests that during a future
eruption, Cumbre Vieja Volcano on the Island of La Palma
may experience a catastrophic failure of its west flank, drop-
ping 150 to 500 km3 of rock into the sea. Using a geologically
reasonable estimate of landslide motion, we model tsunami
waves produced by such a collapse. Waves generated by the
run-out of a 500 km3 (150 km3) slide block at 100 m/s could
transit the entire Atlantic Basin and arrive on the coasts of the
Americas with 10-25 m (3-8 m) height.

Good info here on a potential collapse scenario.

Previous eruptions were effusive in nature.Just lava coming out of vents. And it created instability and visible crack along Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge .Best scenario is nothing happening but with these quakes non stop eruption risk is rising every day.
 Quoting: Mister Pillarr

agreed and the more magma filling that chamber the bigger the chance for a seriously explosive eruption is that right?
 Quoting: Disenfranchised Godzilla1980

Yes that's right. And also quakes create more fractures in the Island of La Palma
