Re: Cumbre Vieja volcano post eruption phase! Time to say goodbye for volcano-thank you for all support :)
To try to save lives, on the East Coast, if this tsunami occurs; it would be good to get an accurate speed of the wave in the Atlantic...

There have been models and simulations that range from 400 mph to 700 mph. By monitoring the Atlantic buoys from the time of the slide to the impact on each buoy would be advantageous in determining wave velocity and more approximate tsunami time of impacts on the East Coast of America...

If someone could verify the approximate distance to verify my findings, it would be greatly appreciated...

Station 13002 - 611 miles

Station 41139 - 1396 miles

Station 41044 - 2586 miles

Station 41049 - 2737 miles

Station 41048 - 3071 miles

Station 44402 - 3153 miles

Station 44066 - 3180 miles

Station 44069 - 3200 miles

This last buoy is the Great South Bay of Long Island...

Thank you...

You would know almost right away even if all communications suddenly stopped with LP. You would get reports of tsunamis in Spain and other islands. It would also allow for calculations on how fast it is going. The buoys are needed more for a collapse of something in the middle of the ocean.

I'll say it again -- I am convinced that TPTB would rather have people perish in a coastal disaster than have to deal with a refugee crisis of epic proportion.

This kind of refugee crisis would not be survivable by any country.

.
 Quoting: Whatever It Takes

Yeah, if this one goes they're going to try to keep the warning from getting out for as long as possible. They need as many people to die in place as possible. Something like 25%-40% of the US' logistics network sits directly in the affected zone of the worst case scenario.

Simply put, we'd be an instant 3rd world country if even 10% of the population of the direct impact zone got out. (Doing some quick head math 10% of the population in the direct impact zone would be more than the entire population of Syria Afghanistan and Iraq combined.

That's not even including the fact that pretty much everyone east of the Mississippi is turbo fucked because we'd have to move basically every bit of everything they need up the Mississippi for months to years to more likely A DECADE after the tsunami!

Also if you look at the number of EPA super fund sites and etc this would slam directly through you're talking tens to hundreds of trillions of dollars in cleanup before sea life might start coming back along the Eastern seaboard and gulf of Mexico
 Quoting: roguetechie81

That’s quite a scenario you’ve outlined, rogue.

Talk about logistics! What would happen to that many dead bodies? Are they counting on all of them washing out to sea? Gruesome thought...but let’s consider the logistics. Not just supplies for the survivors, but the death and destruction brought upon us.
Quoting: Deplorable NO MORE Michele B

Fema many coffins would become handy but who would be left to do the clean up? Such a sad scenario and I hope it doesn’t happen.

No. He wants things like seismographs and shit.

This isn’t a modern data set we can pull outta my academic fat ass.

You're not required to submit this data.
In a nutshell, I just wanna know similar scenarios that have occurred in the past with other volcanoes and the outcomes. I am not asking for anyone to give me a solid answer, just wondering if someone might have a link that I was unable to see and search for.

My apologies if I came across as demanding or an asshole, not intended at all.
 Quoting: The Profiler

hugs

Thanks.

But the point stands that there is no data. There are some geological records but not data as in it happened recently.

If you go to the OP there is the DaY paper that shows the past slides. But it’s ancient and there wasn’t modern data collection tools. ;)

And you are right about the cross disciplinary issue here. My head is really frustrated that the geology and volcanology just are not seeing the physics, chemical, and electrical issues in this system.

We did have a geochemist pop in. I was honest about my background and he never did say much after that.

sigh

It's all good man.

I'll contribute if I can, when I might get a valid link.
Just gonna observe now.

Haven't kept up with this tread over the past few days. Just looked at the EQ map for La Palma and noticed there were a couple EQ on the OTHER SIDE of the island's ridge. This cannot be good that they are spreading to the other side....????

[link to www.ign.es]
 Quoting: MarketPulse

The "slide block" proposed by Ward & Day actually extends under the ridge snd out the other side by a kilometer or two.
(See the OP post #1 for the link to the paper..the scenatic is on page 2).

EQ's up and down the ridge are deep at the moment, 8-12km. Whilst concerning I am watching to see if that depth rises closer to the surface. I would guess anything less than 5km and over 3.0Mag is VERY concerning.

Anyone else disagree?
 Quoting: S-man

Agree. And I would say number matters too.

The ground might have time to resettle between given the constant vibrations.
 Quoting: CleverCreator

I have attached a 3d map of the earthquakes. There are 3 groups that I see, the deepest ones, the middle ones, and the shallow ones. The middle ones seem to reveal two lobes to a magma chamber under the island; a west lobe and a southward eastward lobe. It looks to me that magma heat/pressure is now working on the southward lobe which could result in vents opening at the South end.

Been trying to find an ETA on lava reaching ocean it must be close now.

I've been asking for THAT info for a couple of days

other than your own EYE BALLS to watch some of the

recent that is.

I'm trying to use those 2 little hills (they are extinct
vents from previous eruptions) where the trajectory of
the lava is flowing right now. I try to calculate by how
close it is getting there...and the distance from the
beach looks like about 1/4 mile. THAT IS VERY CLOSE...
but it depends on what's going on at the TOP OF THE FLOW
to really figure out if the lava stream will even make it
that far.

Oh well...We can put a man on the moon but we can't
figure out some of the SPECIFICS (due to NO DATA) for

What worries me, is that for the last 2 days, we have seen TONS of black smoke coming out of the very top of the volcano. Seriously --the column of smoke is massive, and the flaming lava plume is only about 1/3 to 1/4 the width of the column of smoke.

This makes me wonder if part of the cone is blocked, since there is so much black smoke compared to the flaming lava?

Have any volcano experts or geologists explained why there is so much more black smoke coming out of the mouth of the volcano, compared to the lava plume?

Does anyone here on this thread know if it's normal for volcanoes to have this much black smoke, compared to lava? Is this normal? Does it mean there are still lots more explosions to come?

The flaming lava plume is only about 1/3rd the width of the massive column of smoke that has been coming out of the top of the cone for the past few days.

I shudder to think what happens if the volcano becomes unblocked and lets losoe....or if it doesn't get unblocked and explodes.
 Quoting: Otter girl

Well, the volcano just answered my question for me. Lol.

An expert indeed. He wrote this on the second day of the eruption.

He says
"We stopped monitoring movement at the Cumbre Vieja in the early 2000s, so have no idea what has been happening since then, and especially in the build-up to the current eruption. Nonetheless, it is important to recognises that the west flank of the volcano remains an actively unstable rock mass that will fail at some point.

We continue to be confident that a major, tsunami-generating, collapse is perfectly possible - even probable - at this volcano, whether or not any tsunami impact is localised or extended. WE DO NOT, HOWEVER, PROPOSE THAT IT WILL HAPPEN IN THIS ERUPTION. It is likely that when the west flank fails, it will do so during an eruption, but this could be 10, 30, or 50 eruptions down the line. The chances that collapse will occur during the current eruption are very small, but we cannot say they are zero."
