Open water tsunami's travel at 500 to 600 hundred miles per hour, and would be virtually unseen till they were closer to land.
Quoting: Mangia It will be detected. A massive collapse of the La Palma volcano, or ridge, will be the first indicator. Think ...... they have already gamed the scenarios. I promise. Quoting: Lady Jane Smith "IF" LaPalma loses part of the island the underseas communications cables off the island could FAIL at the EXACT time of the collapse, or within a couple of minutes as the waves disturbed both the undersea cables and the shoreside boxes where they come ashore. In other words the island "MAY" be able to get out a 5 - 10 second or so distress call, which may or may not be heard, before communications with the island are cut off. Of course that is a WORST CASE scenario ... and communications "may" remain up with the part of the island that remains, but do NOT count on the regular communications lines remaining up and being able to convey to the outside world the extent of what happened ... and even if they do those on the island itself may not figure out how much of the island slipped into the sea until at or after a Tsunami would already be hitting parpts of the US (and LONG AFTER it had already hit Europe) (man I am in a "doom" mode tonight ... :-( ) Quoting: Midwest Skeptic There's a way to monitor if communications are cut to La Palma. Find a server and its IP that is physically in La Palma. Use an automatic ping program (or just ping itself from CLI) to see if the server is still reponding. There's free programs for this. Those of us on the old Ebola thread came up with this, and discovered things were fine in the African nations supposedly going dark over Ebola. It was doom off, well, for that crisis. Quoting: Cheyenne THAT is very clever...you know tho, that ANYONE who cooperates with such a plan would be looked at side-ways by the La Palma officials as I am very definitely certain they do NOT WISH international communications about what is going on in La Palma. Be very careful about such a plan if you try this because you may put the person who's IP you are "pinging" at risk legally (as if THAT matters if they are facing a 1,000 foot wave, right? lol!) Just sayin! :MASSYsays: The Oracle's Cookie
