And witnesses to said tsunamis. My dad witnessed the 1918 one in PR.


Vaguely remember that bit of history from my visit to the island. Had to look up the specifics.

West coast got a 20 ft wave. So even a small wave can wreak havoc and destruction. In 1918, not so developed but fast fwd to today, yeah. That'd be a damn mess to clean up on like a hurricane level.


We need to remember how buildings and houses are constructed in PR. Did you ever get to see El Morro in Old San Juan? Some wooden houses from back then are still standing. The rest were 10 inch wide brick walls and others are solid concrete (no financing available if this requirement is not met) My Dad’s family business solid brick building was facing the ocean. Guess what happened to it? And the rest of the homes in that avenue?

Interesting, several km south of any other quakes that are part of the island structure......

Right before the 4.4 was a 3.1 in the ocean just south of the island at a depth of 26km.

Found this research article that was just released yesterday. I find it interesting because it talks about how it is not always true that the more water is within magma, the more chance that the "volcano will explode." Scientists have also found that more water can also reduce the chance of explosion.

The article says

"Volcanoes on islands such as La Palma or Hawaii are known to be unlikely to produce huge explosions."

They go on to say

"If there are large quantities of dissolved gases in the magma, gas bubbles form in response to the decrease in pressure as the magma rises up through the conduit, similar to what happens in a shaken champagne bottle. These gas bubbles, if they cannot escape, then lead to an explosive eruption. In contrast, a magma containing little dissolved gas flows gently out of the conduit and is therefore much less dangerous for the surrounding area."

Me too! I usually have that one running while I get other things done. Tried to find another feed with the same view, but I didn't see anything else.

Still beyond oh fuck levels

The interesting thing is that the new lava runs towards the north-west part of the valley, though the earthquakes are focused on the Ridge to the south, western and eastern part of the island.
