ha, thank you! very sweet. Professor's name was Something-Ulrich Schmincke, if I caught that right. he says: the length of time it has been erupting now is not longer than the length of time it has done it before. He sees it as a volcanic island growing in the usual volcanic fashion - magma is tossed out as lava, cooler thicker lava at first, then hotter, thinner lava later on. Both stages of lava build new deltas that extend into the sea. He did not answer the question if ALL of the island inhabitants are at risk, and not just those whose area is directly in the path of the lava flow. the words on the screen said: NO MORE HARMFUL GASES... had to figure that one out. They were referring to the harmful gases released when lava hit factories, etc. not to the volcano itself. Thank you Beeches!  you are welcome! now I am gonna editorialize: Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Schmincke was very casual about it all. Way more than he should be, given that this prolonged eruption is right in his neighborhood, so to speak. It won't happen again so soon before he retires, not near Europe in any case. unless Vesuvius is reading this...His very dry delivery is normal for Germans with titles like Professor. The newsguy seemed a TOUCH incredulous that the Professor does not see things worse, but not much. He would not show his skepticism on the air. Not the done thing at all in Germany. So there we have it. The airport is weiterhin open (still open). BCB does an excellent job of remaining human in a foreign language. Can be a challenge. He masters it every time.
