I want to thank all those who brought deeply-felt views to this discussion thread. I spent several years in the military 50 years ago. There is a chain of command and Milley taking it upon himself to initiate contact with a member of China's general staff apart from the chain of command is unprecedented as far as I know. There is more to this story which, for some reason, has not made it to the mass media. This is a reference to some events involving President Trump towards the end of 2019. Thanks again to the interesting crowd at GLP.

Trump chose Milley to become Chairman because he WASN’T recommended by Mattis, who he was “fighting” with at the time, & Dunford. Trump liked Milley’s Ivy League education & felt they established a strong personal relationship during interviewing.
