Taylor immediately drove his Buick at high speed to Haleiwa to join the air battle.[2] While climbing into their P-40s, the crew chiefs informed them that they should disperse their planes. "To hell with that", Welch said.

Taking off with only .30-cal ammunition in the wing guns, Welch claimed two kills of Aichi D3A Val dive bombers over Ewa Mooring Mast Field.[3]

The first Japanese aircraft was only damaged and made it back to its carrier, while the second was finished off by Ken Taylor, shortly before he landed at Wheeler Field to get .50-cal ammo for his two cowl guns.

On his second sortie, Welch shot down a Val (which was behind Ken Taylor, and crashed in the community of Wahiawa) then one Mitsubishi Zero fighter about 5 miles west of Barbers Point.[4]

Both Welch and Taylor were nominated for the Medal of Honor by General Henry H. Arnold, but were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest US Army medal for valor, for their actions.[5][6]

That's not actually true. There are several areas where they are actively ahead.

The areas they are ahead also happen to be the areas it would take to push us all the way back to Hawaii or even the west coast.

One thing that the US navy doesn't talk about much is how modern naval combat will be heavily reliant on salvo depth in both offense and defense.

The reason they don't talk about it much is because our missile inventories for all the really key missiles are very thin.

Even worse, you need big naval port facilities to reload our ships once they unload what's in their missile cells. for as long as we can keep Diego yokosuka and a few other places this isn't a huge issue *as long as we can get planes loaded with naval missiles in* but the second that stops being possible we're in serious trouble.

The whole USMC reorganization to become "missile marines" is a bad sign in this regard. It's us functionally deciding to trade one entire service branches lives for HOPEFULLY enough time to keep us in the fight while missile production slams to full war time capacity (which still isn't shit) and maybe save our bacon!
