You just saw a vent opening from that damn thing.

Its years since I saw the documentary, but the geological evidence shows that there have been these massive slides in the past because...

1) The islands build up mostly as cinder cones/shields which by virtue of the capillary effect causes layers of groundwater up the sides of the mountain.

2) The intrusion of magma and dyking causes those layers to boil, expand and shear off.

Presumably know one knows if this will do that, but apparently it has as evidence via undersea scans of the runoff and the known geology of the islands.

I think it just did.
