The cops are trying to be "in the middle" but those times are ending.

Those cops were in the wrong.

It's real simple:

1) The hospital cannot hold her husband against her consent especially if she is his wife.
They can try to convince her to leave him but they cannot stop her from moving him to another hospital or taking him home.
She needs to serve them with papers stating that she wants to remove him from that hospital and that she is acting as his healthcare surrogate legally as his wife.

2) she needs to say three things and repeat them over and over:
she is concerned about the standard of care he is getting,
they are infringing on the patient's rights,
and any attempt to stop her from removing him is illegal imprisonment.

Hospital staff get very proactive when they are threatened with these terms because the hospital can lose their licenses immediately.

She should also tell them she is going to The Joint Commission over the way they denied her, her rights as her husband's healthcare surrogate.

The Joint Commission is like an Inspector General for all hospital's generally hospital staff squat and shit bricks whenever they hear that a Joint Commission might get involved and assess their standards of care.

Yeah, I am pretty sure the guy could not breath and his blood oxygen level was down in the crash zone.
