User ID: 80853467 United States 09/19/2021 10:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My dad is the director of the Plant Board for a southern state that’s one of the most productive areas in the US. He said having a local aqua phonics system on a 200 by 200 foot area would meet the nutritional needs of roughly 1000 people. (Viral) infection is a danger, but in the north a dozen insulated shipping containers would do the same thing. He hopes the future is small an acre or less multi purpose local farm supplying roughly 1000 local people. The hurdle is the FDA, state and local regulations. The Monsanto’s atleast here is automatically approved because they are approved by another state, and the little guy must jump and pass 3 years worth of inspections before they can hit the retail market. User ID: 80752870 United States 09/19/2021 10:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've created and maintained water filters and aquaponic systems from basic materials for about 12 years. Amazon sells some crushed activated charcoal and zeolite cheap. This is great for water and air filtration. Activated carbon filters are also great for both purposes. Most of my tanks / aquaponics are hands off except for evaporative processes making me refill with water which is heavily mitigated by not having the system as open air as possible. Most bodies of water, if not overstocked with fish and adequately planted, require only a simple sponge filter to keep the water moving and aerated. These filters do not have to be large, and you can save a lot of money rather than making intricate systems of filtration. The best fish for aquaponics for strictly growing food are 'mosquito fish' which can be eaten in a pinch. They are a bit smaller than sardines. They eat insects and have a small bio load. You want to add some pond snails, which are easily populated by purchasing any plant from pretty much any source as all of them are infested and they are considered a pest species... wrongly. Snails keep your surfaces clean of algae, which steal nutrient from the water that is intended for plants. An ideal setup doesn't have much algae, but every setup does. A typical water filter for anything from a pond to a fish tank doesn't require expensive filter media if you don't go the sponge filter route. You can get a bag of lava rock from your local hardware or landscaping store and it functions as good or better than the highest priced stuff on the market. As a bonus, it makes great and attractive looking substrate for subsurface plants when crushed with a hammer (high in minerals). It can be paired with sand, or with a sand cap on a dirted tank. For aquaponics, adding diatomaceous earth at a rate of a spoon full per 5 gallon also adds a lasting source of calcium and kills any bottom dwelling insects (as well as your snails so requires balance). I also dust my plants with it when I see any signs of leaf eaters. I could go on for ages, but that's all I feel like typing now. If you have questions feel free to ask. Edit to add: An established aquaponics system doesn't need any real filtration. Just circulation which is provided by the sponge filter. The bacteria will line the porous filter and inside of the container to handle the nitrogen cycle. When not overstocked this will remain in balance and plants will thrive. There is no need for fertilizers if you run fish. Rain water is high in ammonia, so it also provides its own nutrient if you have adequate nitrogen fixing bacteria population to manage it. It does work! be sure to include filtration with cleanable medium keep solids out of the gro beds. Start kinda of small as you will rebuild it modify it often! fish tank tote make sure that no pipes are near the bottom so it can never drain all the way, so keeps some water for the fish. Get a hose timer as I left my on to many times topping off. I found hydroponic grow trays 2ft x4ft and 4x8 work great! for raft and hydroten. Sandman1! |

Yes, Anonymous Cowboy, please share your plan! Sandman, thanks so much! We plan to install a whole house generator because we live in a hurricane zone - goodbye Ida! I could use a small one for the aquaponics tanks. Using my personal hotspot and will be here off and on because we still have no internet since Ida struck. Have t conserve the hotspot. Anyone who comes to the thread and has anything aquaponics related to share, please do. Thanks everyone for your replies! Will check back in tomorrow afternoon. The Japanese have a way of preserving fish w salt.. something like beef jerky. No reason to waste all that fish. |

User ID: 80752870 United States 09/21/2021 02:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is why mosquito fish are great for starting cycles. Small bio load and you can add more as your tanks adjust. Fishless cycle is all the rage but most people screw it up. I did it for a 3D printed media I created, but it would have been way easier to add a small cheap fish to do the same work hands-off. I had to be precise down to the mol though, so I couldn't. |

AT&T is supposed to come tomorrow to set up Internet that will use temporarily until we get charged back. Have a feeling though it won't work out because we haven't received the modem yet and supposedly they don't carry them in their trucks. It really is beyond me how a company can get that big and still have people so inept running things. Thanks for the heads up! Our aquaponics set up will have to wait a bit because my husband and I have decided to sell our house and get something smaller. It's just too big for two people. |
