Heavily armed police have blanketed Melbourne, cracking down on protesters who have persisted despite the Victoria earthquake.


A heavy police presence has blanketed Melbourne in an effort to prevent further chaos after yesterday's mass protest turned violent.

Multiple arrests have already been made in the vicinity of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) headquarters.

Lines of police officers, including mounted police and others bearing riot shields, are in the area around the CFMEU building. Police helicopters are patrolling overhead.

They showed a police checkpoint herding protesters into a kettling zone and the cops on duty were armed with what looked like live M4 rifles rather than the more familiar pepperball paintball style guns. Seems they are under orders to bring today's protest to a decisive end.
