Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens and Atlanta Police held an emergency press conference following a violent, organized attack by antifa and far-left extremists in downtown on Jan. 21, 2023. The mayor confirmed that the riot arrestees came from out of state and had explosives. The rioters attacked businesses, cars and the Atlanta Police Foundation in an act of vengeance for the shooting death of their comrade gunman at their autonomous zone south of the city. The gunman, who they declare a martyr, had shot and severely wounded a state trooper before being shot dead. Far-left extremists across the U.S. have organized vigils to honor the gunman.
