Works based salvation is truth - you must earn your salvation, and how to reason the scriptures together
First is WHY you don't agree, but I'll show the proof. You don't agree because you've been told it one way for so long and have believed it, therefore accepted it to be true, that when someone like me comes along and says it's another way it is ridiculed, then will be violently opposed, and then accepted as being self evident. The second reason of disbelieving it is the second stage of violent opposition. This happens on an individual level when the believer does not earn their salvation, they are opposed to having to earn it, and the reason is because it is "WORK". Most people are barely surviving as it is, and struggling just to live, that God "now" requiring for them to do MORE is more work, is more burden, and the thought is that God should make things easier for them not harder. That of course is twisted thinking because it is assuming that God wants you to live according to the world first and his way second, when it's the other way around. You're supposed to adjust your life around God, not society or money.

Here are some of the supporting verses:

(The whole of Matthew 25)
St. Matthew 25:44-46
Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Doing works and repenting of sins:

Revelation 2:5
Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works (evangelism); or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick (Holy Spirit) out of his place, except thou repent.

St. Matthew 25:24-30
Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

1 Timothy 2:14-15
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

Revelation 2:14-16
But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate. Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

Revelation 2:22-23
Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

Revelation 2:26
And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

Revelation 3:2
Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

Revelation 3:15-17,19
I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
...
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Here's very important verses, the Word of God:

James 2:14-26
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

And I'll finish with the most obvious verse that opposes faith-based-salvation-alone, comparing it to the one that seems to be opposed to works-based-salvation:

Not works-based salvation:

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Works-based salvation:

Philippians 2:12-13
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Without getting too technical, the point to be made is that the Holy Spirit in you is what saves you. For sin does one reject the Holy Spirit within, for want of sin. So if the Holy Spirit is not in you, even though it may have been before, there's no going to heaven.

Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:4
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:6-7
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Romans 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Romans 8:13-14
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

St. John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Now for those who died in the Old Testament without the Holy Spirit will receive it if they are worthy (died not with a sin record) at the resurrection.

The scriptures I presented are necessary to be read for you to understand how I see it and what the Words of God say that are opposed to faith-based-salvation-alone.

We are saved with and by the Holy Spirit. Without it there is the presence of unrepentant sin or unforgiven sin or maybe forgiveness but without baptism of the Spirit, as some still will die in forgiveness yet without the Holy Spirit.

SALVATION therefore means two things biblically, the Holy Spirit in you is salvation, and passing the final judgment is salvation from judgment. WITHOUT understanding those two meanings, then is there confusion and the false belief that ALL SALVATION is based on believing IN Jesus.

But belief is not the equivalent of faith.

If you believe in Jesus then you should believe what he said. He warned that there is still punishment for sin, and he told us what to do in order to avoid NOT passing his final judgment. If you truly believe in Jesus then you will truly believe his words and fear and obey, or love and obey, but either way obey. If there is no obedience to his words to work good works for salvation sake then there is a false sense of security that leads ignorant, faithless believers to destruction.

St. Luke 11:42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Don't be a blind sheep, just a good sheep. Follow the directions of your Shepherd.
