Luke 10:19

So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you.

Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”…

Psalm 91:13
You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent.

Mark 16:18
they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be made well.

Re: Did Jesus give us the authority to trample on the enemy?
...Does Mark 16:17, 18 show that ability to heal the sick would be a sign identifying believers?

Mark 16:17, 18, KJ: “These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

These verses appear in certain Bible manuscripts and versions of the fifth and sixth centuries C.E. But they do not appear in the older Greek manuscripts, the Sinaiticus and Vatican MS. 1209 of the fourth century. Dr. B. F. Westcott, an authority on Bible manuscripts, said that “the verses . . . are no part of the original narrative but an appendage.” (An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels, London, 1881, p. 338) Bible translator Jerome, in the fifth century, said that “almost all the Greek codices [are] without this passage.” (The Last Twelve Verses of the Gospel According to S. Mark, London, 1871, J. W. Burgon, p. 53) The New Catholic Encyclopedia (1967) says: “Its vocabulary and style differ so radically from the rest of the Gospel that it hardly seems possible Mark himself composed it [that is, verses 9-20].” (Vol. IX, p. 240)

There is no record that early Christians either drank poison or handled serpents to prove they were believers.

Why were such gifts as the ability to do miraculous healing given to first-century Christians?

Heb. 2:3, 4: “How shall we escape if we have neglected a salvation of such greatness in that it began to be spoken through our Lord and was verified for us by those who heard him, while God joined in bearing witness with signs as well as portents and various powerful works and with distributions of holy spirit according to his will?”

(Here was convincing evidence, indeed, that the Christian congregation, which was then new, was truly of God. But once that was fully established, would it be necessary to prove it again and again?)

1 Cor. 12:29, 30; 13:8, 13: “Not all are prophets, are they? . . . Not all have gifts of healings, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? . . .
Love never fails.
But whether there are gifts of prophesying, they will be done away with; whether there are tongues, they will cease . . . Now, however, there remain faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

(When they had accomplished their purpose, those miraculous gifts would cease.
But priceless qualities that are the fruitage of God’s spirit would still be manifest in the lives of true Christians.)....

You never even needed authority to travel on anyone and that's part of free will, but since they are being poetic one should really question what trample really means. Physically or, in a debate perhaps, what does it just signify a major victory to say that you trampled on them

it depends.
human enemies yes. Spiritual ones no, not by our power.
It is only through the power of God, that this occurs.

Jude dealt with this in Ch 1:8-12
8Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies, reject authority, and slander glorious beings.
9But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
10These men, however, slander what they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively. 11Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion.
12These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts, shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.……

Re: Did Jesus give us the authority to trample on the enemy?
But this is an example that was fulfilled in the 1st century
[and still goes on being fulfilled]-

Gen 3:14 Then Jehovah God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, you are the cursed one out of all the domestic animals and out of all the wild animals of the field. On your belly you will go, and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman
[or "Jerusalem Above", who is like Sarah, "the free woman" -Galatians]
and between your offspring and her offspring.[i.e., Jesus Christ, prefigured by, and descended from- Isaac]

He will crush your head, and you will strike him in the heel. [nail in Jesus' heels, at execution (?)]

John 16
33In the world you will have tribulation, but take courage! I have conquered the world.”

On this last night of his earthly life, Jesus could rightly say: “I have conquered the world.”
He triumphed over the world by not becoming like it, by not permitting the thinking and actions of unrighteous human society to influence him in any way.
By his faith, loyalty, and integrity, Jesus proved that “the ruler of the world,” Satan, had “no hold” on him. (See study note on Joh 14:30.)
Jesus stated in the prayer recorded in John chapter 17 that neither he nor his disciples were part of this world. (Joh 17:15, 16)
And when on trial before Pilate, Jesus told that Roman governor: “My Kingdom is no part of this world.” (Joh 18:36)

More than 60 years after Jesus’ trial, John was inspired to write: “This is the conquest that has conquered the world, our faith.”
—1Jo 5:4, 5.

Re: Did Jesus give us the authority to trample on the enemy?
HERE IS THE TRUTH (not opinion):

We trample on the enemy by loving them through Jesus Christ.

(Vengeance is mine saith the Lord -- and this is the ONLY scripture anyone needs to quote.)

Through Jesus Christ, by using Jesus Christ, that is pure love, and by targeting your enemy with your own personal love for them (hard as that is to do), you can then ask God, that is pure justice (i.e. a hundred thousand billion hurricanes of pure justice), to help them. If they need "trampling" or some kind of help, they will get it!

So... "authority" means ability, but not necessarily a knowledge of who the enemy is. Only God knows who needs fixing and how. Our job is simple: Love them, ask God to help them, and then watch (and see what happens)! If you are correct and they need fixing: God will bring the truth to light (which in most cases looks like a lot like trampling!)

This can be proven: Love Jesus, Repent (purge your contaminated body), Love Your Enemy (it's hard, but you CAN do it), Ask God to "help them".

RESULTS WITHIN 24 HOURS! Guaranteed. (the more evil they are, the sooner and more evident will be your result!)

Do I love Jesus because He gives me gifts, or do I get gifts because I love Jesus...

 Quoting: HIRSHEL

I appreciate what you are saying and the spiritual demons that control people are the target of the battle, not the people themselves. We fight not against flesh and blood, but against demons, principalities etc.

People often to not understand what Jesus meant by serpents and scorpions. How are these two related. The bible has used various animals to describe the basic nature of certain demons: Frogs, Foxes, Serpents, Scorpions, etc.

Why serpents and scorpions?
A serpent has its venom poison its head. This kind of demon confuses people, makes them foggy and forgetful of God's ways and promises:

By contrast, the scorpion has its venom poison in its tail.
As in turn tail and run. This type demon induces fear, anxiety and guilt.

So when Jesus said those words, he meant that Jesus has you covered from head to tail in the fight against demons and other powers of wickedness, not the people themselves.

No, he did not. This is a myth in the church. Read the next verse. He did that to be numbered with the transgressors. Jesus said sell your cloak (saints hidden away from the devil for first 1/2 tribulation) and buy a sword (the word of God is sharper than any 2-edged sword) and someone said they have 2 swords and Jesus said that's enough (because by the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses let every matter be established) and also the 2 witnesses that follow Jesus which speak the word which is sharper than any 2-edged sword. What he said has deep spiritual meaning for the end times.

Also, in the Garden when Peters usd his sword Jesus rebuked him and said that he could call upon 12 legions of angels to defend him and he healed the ear of the guy.

You folks don't seem to understand the Bible very well.
