Don't buy anything that needs cooking. Probably wont be electricity or gas anyway.

People will smell it or see smoke and come to butcher you!

I got a few five gallon food grade buckets from lowes and then filled them with rice, beans/lentils/peas and pasta. It didn't cost that much and you can buy a some every time you shop. Even starting late, it shouldn't take long to build up at least a month or two worth of food.
 Quoting: themessengernevermatters

I been getting those for free from grocery stores. Bakery department gets them with frosting in them. They throw them out when they’re empty. I have two stores who save them for me.

I have pet food in them, and rice/pasta, etc. some of them are square rather than circular so store more and more efficiently.

FYI the black totes 27 ish gallon with the yellow lids hold 3 bags of 50 pounds rice beans ect and they stack of like $10 each is ok to keep the mice and rats out even with 100s of pounds stacked on them no problems.

Well at this stage of world events, If I did not have any food insurance, I would buy big bags of the basic foods and feed store whole grains and seeds!

And as many months of what we eat as I could.

there is no such thing as no space...

if you have no space you have too much shit thats useless and of no benefit...

all that shit taking up space...sell the crap...

if you cant use your crap in a grid down no power world then sell it...

now you have space and money to go prep...

fucking morons...cant even figure out easy solutions...

Many people now live in RV's, shelled trucks, sleeper haul trcks and vans. Many have tiny apartments or just a bedroom in someone else's home. These are the no-space people and there's a lot of them.

Prepping is an attitude or a way of life. When people start going down this rabbit hole it takes many forms.

If you don't have space, garage sale or whatever you do in the UK.

Beans and rice. The beans are a poor nutrition source, poorly digested by most animals and take way too much energy to cook. They are good for sprouting and eating with a little vinegar and oil. Lentils are the best.

Food banks were an excellent source of food. The govt will try to secure food for the masses in order to avoid mass chaos. It ensures their own survival to feed the masses. Take whatever they give out.

It's not about space. There is only so long some people can survive on preper or emergency food that is mostly carbohydrates, beans, pasta, rice, canned foods. Without fresh whole food, life becomes diminished to a level not worth living. I don't eat any canned or preprepared foods ever. So to do it to survive for me is going to be very difficult. I'm grabbing as much canned fruit as I can find, I'm going shopping tomorrow for more stuff, but bottom line most canned foods with protein in it only last 3 years and I don't want to eat it anyway. We have food pantries here and the Homeless mission is 2 miles away if I really get desperate to eat. I freeze hamburger but if the electric goes out, that won't work anyway.

Some people can't prep,no money or space and now see shelves in stores emptying, prices rising.Food banks under pressure can't supply much.

My advice would be before anything else buy various stock cubes, bouillon, have chicken, vegetable and beef.

With this even if there is no other food,in a real pinch you can drink one cube in hot water.Even if you can only find a can of beans, you can make a nourishing soup which can serve more people than eating it solid.

Also try to get honey, it keeps in a jar better then sugar, tea, when things are really tight have one day only tea, the next the soup.

If you know how to make soup then when you are able to get rice, meat, freh vegetables, include these.

Start eating very frugally now and use any spare money no matter how little, to buy cans of soup, tuna, tomatoes, fruit vegetables.Keep these, even one drawer of such goods may see you through a few weeks.

Knowledge is what you need.

There will be lots of Pigeons, feral cats and dogs and other critters to eat come SHTF. Knowing how to trap or snare them and how to dress them out to make a meal of them is essential.
Knowledge of edible plants and "weeds" is essential also.
As well as how to find and treat water to make it sake to drink.

Preps, someone can steal or you can lose them to a calamity( fire, earthquake, etc)
Survival knowledge is forever.

If you are subtly inferring that there is no more food at the UK food banks, then I would suggest these means of staying alive because this does kick survival up a notch.

Go to the local feed store and see what bulk grains you can get a hold of. The cheapest source of food. Oatmeal and Corn big bags. The grains are courser but just cook a little longer.

Next, find potatoes and throw them in a root cellar, cool dry place for early spring planting. You can throw them in a garbage can filled with dirt and they will grow.

Know your local fauna. Dandelions are an excellent green. The big leaves are bitter, so stay with the younger, smaller ones. They are excellent with chives. This was Ruth Stouts favorite salad. She was a home gardener who advocated gardening in the nude. Way ahead of her time..

The dandelion roots can be used as coffee/tea. Excellent herbal healing powers. The plant is related to chickory somehow, IIRC.

Still go to the food bank and take whatever you can get. It is something.

Now gardening is what will keep food going. There are winter crops. I'm all about the kale.

Hoop house

One Chicken for 2 people and feed with surrounding fauna. They do like some grain when laying eggs. Grain I suspect will start to climb in price. Chickens recycle a compost pile nicely.

Inside containers, growing is another means to keep things going. Lettuce and celery will reproduce from stock. Ginger grows anywhere.

Gorilla gardening. Look it up. I know people who grew tomatoes in downtown Detroit, successfully.

People raise rabbits in apartment buildings. They don't need space and are very quiet.

Yes, when shopping and you see a sale buy 3 instead of 2 cans and build up the supplies.

This is the kind of thinking that has to prevail. Yes hard times are here, but GLP knew this was coming years ago. Just be sure to slow down and think things through. The answer is out there.

Pooka has a great thread called "Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor" that you might find some info in. I'm with you, no money, but I started when I was reading Pooka's thread and saved up mostly meat. Now that meat is really pricey, I'm glad I did.

I have 3 cheap freezers (used) and I have a pressure canner and canned a lot of that meat. I'm glad I got the food because I can't afford the high prices any more.

Some people say get beans and rice, and that will make a whole protein, but if you are used to having meat, you'll not be very satisfied with beans and rice day after day.

One thing you can do is go to your local United Way and get some USDA government surplus pantry items and if they have it, meat. The grocery stores when meat is getting close to the end date will throw it in the freezer, give it to United Way and the store can write off their donation.

If you are truly out of money, that is what I'd do. I may have to do that myself if my food storage runs out.

All the other prices are going up too, electricity, internet service. We have over the air tv, so we gave up that expense long ago. You might be able to see where you can cut an expense. We will keep our internet as long as we can, but that may need to go as well.

Local food banks and food pantries.
Most of them here you just show up on the day and they load your car. No ID necessary.

You can go to another in a nearby town if needed, so i've heard.

Over 50 in your household gets 2 boxes per month
Over 60 gets 2 different boxes.
Meat, canned goods, cheese, pasta, rice, powdered milk, etc.

First priority is to make sure you can find a good water source. Then a 20 lb bag of rice and beans will last you for awhile. Don’t take much food to live on.

Been prepping for years.

Stay away from the chicken bullion and ramen noodles if clean drinking water is an issue. The salt will make you crazy for water.

Know where you can source water near you. A stream? A river? Sure...but you need to educate yourself on how to make it safe for drinking. Do you know how?

Know the difference between "bugging out" and "sheltering in place" and how to prepare for both.

If you're bugging out, you must have a pre-arranged place to go. You cannot simply "go in the woods". The woods are owned by someone. If they're my woods, I'll probably shoot you. Not because I don't like you, but because I don't know you.

Just my 2 cents.

This is where the mix-up is folks. OP has solid uncle intel that the food banks in England, UK are out of food.

Again, her intel which is solid, I can vouch for it, states the food banks are running out of food. Yes, show up for what is available but from here on out the pickings are slim.

We are on our own and that is why she has started this thread.

Pooka's thread is quite lengthy. I think OP is searching for a quick injection of data.

It's late in the season but if you can find it, can it.

There have been reports that food banks are running low on stock, but walking around my local store and major local supermarkets, it appears there are plenty of low cost canned and dry storage goods available.

Most of on this website are aware of ongoing and potential upcoming events, most of us will already have basic food needs stocked up just in case. Won't hurt to increase that stock whilst available..
