Well, given that today is officially known as World Tsunami Awareness Day (cannot make this up, folks), thought I'd bestow green PINE on this thread.

That is good information if there is a 3 mile wide asteroid going to splash down in the middle of the Atlantic but there won't be an 800 foot wall of water that will hit the east coast. After a big landslide there will be a big wave but is will rapidly dissipate as it radiates outward as it move forward. At worst case it would be 80 feet but probably more like 30 to 40 feet. There will surely be a lot of coastal damage and you should evacuate but 25 mile should be more than enough to escape the water.

Being an old Brownie/Girl Scout from way back when, I'm mindful of my surroundings. A lot of folks have suffered from wolcano fatigue since it started 9/11 w/ quakes. And a lot of folks just suffer from normalcy bias.

And that usually kills a person quick unfortunately.

In 2001, Ward and Day put forward a scientific paper showing how that the entire western flank of La Palma will eventually give way and it could happen during any future eruption. Ward and Day's research, which took other examples of this phenomenon into account, suggested that the impact of this lateral collapse would generate a wave which could reach a local amplitude of between 650 to 1500 meters. This wave would then rapidly travel westwards reaching a speed of approximately 720kph. Although it would diminish in size by the time it made landfall on the eastern seaboard of America, it could still be as high as 50 meters with enough energy to travel up to 25km inland. I live in southwestern Ontario and about a 90-minute drive away from the Niagara Escarpment. About 30 years ago, I lived in a southern Ontario city that sat right on the Escarpment.

Most parts of the eastern part of southern Ontario are already about 600 to 700 feet above sea level. The areas that are right at lake level - places like Toronto, its surrounding suburbs and nearby Hamilton, would get severely flooded if not wiped out. So would Buffalo, New York.

However, in many places near Hamilton, the escarpment can reach heights as great as 750 feet above lake level, so the escarpment would prevent most of the tidal surge from reaching Lake Erie.

Lake Erie water levels would definitely rise, though, because the area immediately surrounding Niagara Falls would act as a sluiceway that would effectively create a new riverine connection between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

How far they would rise is the $64,000 question.

Montreal itself would probably be completely wiped out by a tidal surge coming down the St. Lawrence River, if the surge was large enough and strong enough.

Nevetherless, if the tidal wave will reach the eastern seaboard of the US and Canada in eight hours or less, nobody will be able to evacuate in time.

In southwestern and south-central Ontario, there is pretty much only one major route that will take you deep into northern Ontario and to safety, and that is Highway 400 which starts in Toronto and ends up as Highway 69 (Trans-Canada Highway) which is a two-lane highway.

In the summer months, when people go north to stay at their cottages, Highway 400 can barely handle cottage-country traffic as it is.

So imagine several million cars all trying to get into Toronto to access Highway 400, on top of existing Toronto traffic in an effort to flee the impending flood.
