As a comedian in the 70s, he was banned from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson because of his known drug abuse (a stew of pharmaceuticals, pot, and cocaine). It was the same abuse that led to a heart attack in 1978—his first of many.In 2004, George Carlin voluntarily checked himself into rehab to get a handle on his alcoholism and heavy Vicodin habit (an opioid painkiller), but the damage to his heart had already been done. Over the next three years, he underwent a slew of surgeries, but it was too late. His heart gave out and he passed away on June 22, 2008.
