He hosted the debut broadcast of Saturday Night Live (which was then called "NBC's Saturday Night"). The third Saturday of October, 1975.
It was a majorly funny show back then, and Carlin was the guy to get it off to a good start.
The 47th season kicked off this past Saturday. Yawn.
