DOOM BREAK? Called The Greatest 10-Minutes in U.S. Comedy History—Ever Heard of George Carlin?

It’s hard for old farts to remember that there is nearly a generation of Americans that has never heard of George Carlin. George was a brilliant, totally unique comedian that was able to make any subject hysterically funny. (Much like Richard Pryor).

But George had one talent attribute Pryor did not: He was able to combine political satire with extreme comedy. This comedy piece was voted by US comedians years ago as the ‘funniest 10-minutes in comedy history' and I agree. You may as well.

The first half is an indictment of the American obsession with malls and food. This was obviously pre-covid. Then he turns to our political leaders. Carlin never revealed what party with which he was affiliated. I’m not sure he believed in any of our leaders. He ends the piece by using his most famous line ever and since then it has been repeated by people around the world.

Little known fact: Notice how quickly he thinks and speaks. Carlin MEMORIZED EVERY WORD! People who saw his shows multiple times said his performances were identical each time. Amazing. I miss George Carlin’s voice right now so much we would NEVER BE WOKE. He was a fighter.

***WARNING*** Carlin uses profanity profusely and it is woven throughout this piece. And not just ‘hell’ and ‘damn’. He made a national name for himself getting taken off TV in the 70s because he would not stop using words that he said he had the Constitutional right to use. So if this offends you, please don’t listen. I don’t mind it at all.

For the rest of you, especially younger people that have never heard of him and older people who haven’t heard him in a long time, you are about to remember a time before 20 year-old punks controlled how we are supposed to think. Get ready: You're about to bust a gut.

Carlin is spot on.

The old anti-war alternative left counterculture were the ones that first noticed rampant consumerist society and brought into mainstream awareness...Timothy Leary, Andy Warhol made a career out of it, etc.

Then George Romero picked up on that train of thought with his zombie flicks.

You know, when I first saw this yesterday I just bellied laugh. Within a few minutes I got weepy because I realized how much the satanic democrats stole from us and how correct Carlin's statement's were and we no longer have the ability to publicly state the truth anymore.

Man we miss his voice.

As a comedian in the 70s, he was banned from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson because of his known drug abuse (a stew of pharmaceuticals, pot, and cocaine). It was the same abuse that led to a heart attack in 1978—his first of many.In 2004, George Carlin voluntarily checked himself into rehab to get a handle on his alcoholism and heavy Vicodin habit (an opioid painkiller), but the damage to his heart had already been done. Over the next three years, he underwent a slew of surgeries, but it was too late. His heart gave out and he passed away on June 22, 2008.

He hosted the debut broadcast of Saturday Night Live (which was then called "NBC's Saturday Night"). The third Saturday of October, 1975.

It was a majorly funny show back then, and Carlin was the guy to get it off to a good start.

The 47th season kicked off this past Saturday. Yawn.

Re: DOOM BREAK? Called The Greatest 10-Minutes in U.S. Comedy History—Ever Heard of George Carlin?
Ever heard of him!?

I bought his first classic comedy album when it came out.

I had to look up the date. It was the summer of 1972, and I was nine going on ten years old.

I was already a rebel in school since the first grade. I was so notorious with teachers that years later, when they saw my sister's last name, they asked if I was her brother. When she said yes, the teacher made threats and said she would be watched closely.

I had the same kind of responses as him to school and authorities, who often called me a smart-ass. I think it was just the expected response of intelligent children to so much stupidity and blatant brain washing. Like Carlin, I was always asking questions the teacher didn't want to answer, but I wasn't a clown about it.

I was dead serious, and I wanted to question their sanity, their righteousness, their honor, their hypocrisies, their cowardice, etc. They didn't like a child talking to them like that. I knew class clowns. They were smart kids, full of piss and vinegar, who joked to deliberately provoke teachers, but they also had a way of being cute, and teachers often secretly sort of liked them.

I wasn't trying to be liked, and I was waging serious war against stupidity, hypocrisy, abuse of authority, cruelty, etc. and my intention was to deliver hard blows, verbally or physically. I wanted evil people to remember me by their pain.

Anyway, I understood the class clowns, and that's how I understood George Carlin. Sometimes he was too crude, but he needed attention for his jokes. He was too liberal, but a lot of performers took shelter under that umbrella. It was one of those things "everybody knew". You could get away with a lot as long as you mouthed the right liberal values.

Real intellectual courage would have been slapping Liberals in the face, and everybody else, but it would have alienated too many people to sell tickets.

I remember the culture at the time, the kids who listened to Class Clown over and over, while turning over the album cover. I remember the rumors of rolling paper in a Cheech and Chong record.

George Carlin was a big part of the Summer for nine year old boys back in the day.

I grew up listening to his humor, and marveling at his appearance on television and sometimes even in some freaky movies.

This is 100% accurate. Sadly. A man who who not succumb to anybody owning him, eventually fell into the pill trap.

He was on the Don Imus show on Fox Business in the 90's all the the time and he spoke of that he became addicted to the pills when combined with wine because it amplified the effects.

I could relate when Jim Brewer recently said that he remembered being young and watching Carlin, wondering why he was so angry. Then once he became older and more awake, it was like "ohhhhh... now I get it"

George was a genius and a prophet.

lol

Words are the least of concerns now.
To know where your heart is, look where your mind goes when it wanders.

For the braindead here, his response is an example of a straw man argument under the title of "BAD ARGUMENTS AND HOW TO AVOID THEM."

A straw man argument is a misrepresentation of an opinion or viewpoint, designed to be as easy as possible to refute. Just as a person made of straw would be easier to fight with than a real human, a straw man argument is easy to knock to the ground.

This would be the totally predictable response of the antisocial emotionally stunted mental age 13 male who would find this kind of hostile, aggressively unfunny crap acceptable.

Hi
I remember how funny it was to hear those words said on stage, but it's a common place to hear them now in all types of entertainment.
Carlin was a genius at times but I cringe to hear his bits making fun of Christianity. But to each their own.

My mom and dad listened to Carlin and Pryor after they thought we were asleep. I stayed awake in bed on Friday and Saturday nights to listen, I loved to hear them laughing and talk openly about what they were hearing. They allowed me to stay up to watch Saturday Night Live, but I sneaked into the living room to watch The Midnight Special, (I was never the same after watching Ziggy Stardust and Fleetwood Mac). Dark Shadows and Dr. Who mesmerized me.

But yeah, humour is wasted on this generation. My son says I have "dad joke humour", while I find his humour sickeningly gross. Thanks for your post, I'm leaving now to go watch me some Carlinian wisdom gems.

He was a sage genius who taught others through his comedy and they didn't even realize he was teaching them.

He was on a level with Mark Twain and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
