You need a respirator or a mask that is lined with carbon filters. If you can smell a fart through the mask, it doesn’t work. Even Dr. Mengele Fauci is on tape spouting off that masks are pacifiers for the masses and don’t work on any virus. But the masses are too stupid to care. I'm of the opinion they work "just a little." Having working in a middle school with a mask policy in place now since spring 2020, I do notice that you don't pick up on the body odors and smells that accompany working in close quarters with large groups of smelly adolescents and co-workers. Most of us wear cloth or surgical masks. I wear cloth mostly for comfort and take it off frequently, whenever possible (more and more when not even). When you take it off the air is definitely more pungent. However I don't think for a second the mask protects me from covid. In fact I welcome getting a regular public air exchange indoors just to keep my immune system healthy. And with so many students here and there with stomach bugs, fever and headaches, but no covid cases tested, I have been just fine this whole time FWIW
