Because the mid-point of the political spectrum over the past 60 years has increasingly shifted to the left, today's "centrists" are fairly liberal by past standards. Even a lot of self-described conservatives are very, very squishy.

Which means that self-identifying liberals in today's America are outright corrupt, happily mean-hearted and flat-out sociopathic.
