also it makes very little noise ... could be difficult to determine source of a shot

it's definitely possible to make a crossbow yourself, search youtube there are videos, making a powerful accurate crossbow might be another thing. if the elastic "bow" part could be made from steel that would be a lot easier than something like fiberglass
